The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Department of Medicine, is currently recruiting for aResearch Administrator. The selected candidate will establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, administrators, and staff to provide the highest level of post-award management for sponsor related funds. The incumbent will prepare and record journal entries and reconcile balance sheet accounts, as well as prepare monthly financial statements and variance explanations for the Department. This position will report to the Director of Grants and Contracts. With more than 400 full-time faculty members, Medicine is the largest department in the School of Medicine and is responsible for the education of more than 300 residents and fellows. Our current active research funding exceeds $180 million, over half of which comes from NIH and other federal agencies. With nearly 150 funded investigators, the department has an extensive research base in both the basic and clinical sciences and our research training programs include basic, clinical, and translational research training awards. Primary Duties: * Provide expert direction for Department of Medicine research administration staff by balancing pre-award proposals application and/or submissions and administration of multiple post award activities are executed. Ensure department grants and contracts comply with all federal and state legal requirements and UMB policies prior to review by the Office of Research & Development. *Support Pre-Award Proposal Development * Communicate with faculty and staff to provide instruction, assistance and advice on grant preparation and submission. * Review, interpret, communicate, and ensure sponsor guidelines are in compliance and eligibility information is defined within proposals. Interact directly with sponsor representatives to clarify ambiguous terms. * Manage the preparation and review of grant and contract budgets and applications. Finalize documents for submission and validate proposal error or warnings while acting as a liaison between the department and central sponsored programs administration. Post-Award Project Management * Responsible for award set-up, reporting and close out – included RPPRs, Annual FFRs, Carry over requests, Re-budgets, etc. * Acts as point of contact and advise PI on all financial transactions, such as travel, purchasing, or subcontracting. * Prepare account reconciliations and financial statements to include actual to budget variance explanations to the practice/department with accuracy. * Generates and forwards volume-based invoices to sponsors for payments. Applies knowledge of accounting practice to area of specialty to assure that transactions are properly handled. * Verifies discrepancies and resolves sponsors’ billing issues. Uses independent judgment to determine acceptable options to resolve. * Ensure effort reporting is consistent with sponsor policies and completed quarterly. * Responsible for coordinating human resources processes including recruitment and hiring of staff, fellow, and student positions, as well as managing funding profiles. * Performs other duties as assigned. Education:Bachelor's degree. Master's degree preferred. Related experience may be substituted for education. Experience:Six (6) years progressively building research administrative background with at least 4 years in full life-cycle research administration. Supervisory Experience:One (1) year of work coordination or training of others preferred. Certification/Licensure:Certified Research Administrator (CRA) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred. Other:Financial disclosure reporting required by State of Maryland Ethics Commission. Completion of a 12 credit Research Administration graduate certificate program can be considered for the equivalent of one (1) year of relevant research administration work experience.
