Description of Work Unit
Veterinary Teaching Hospital
The CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital ( VTH ) exists to provide exceptional veterinary care and service to the community while educating the next generation of veterinarians at a tertiary level teaching hospital. The Small Animal Intermediate Care Unit ( IMCU ) is an integral part of the VTH providing 24-hour, exceptional medical care to patients needing hospitalization for specialized care and outpatient recovery services for same-day procedures. This is a growing service that provides hospital care to all small animal areas of the hospital, supports teaching/guidance for veterinary students, is a medical facility for veterinary research, and is a public animal health care center for exotic, large and small animals.

Position Summary
This position provides exceptional technical and nursing support to IMCU patients. The position admits patients, provides anesthesia recovery, administers medication, treatments and overall specialized patient care as ordered by the VTH service clinicians. This position instructs/guides veterinary technician students, technicians, and veterinary students working in IMCU as needed. This position has a higher level of experience that allows them to manage and guide the needs of our patients.
Working hours- the hours will be between 12:30pm-2:30am.
This is an essential worker position and must be willing and able to report to work as directed to perform essential and/or emergency services without delay or interruption.
The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
A combination of signing bonus + relocation expenses available = $2,500 max
Required Job Qualifications
Registered as a Veterinary Technician (VT) or Provisional Veterinary Technician ( PVT ) through the Department of Regulatory Agencies ( DORA ).
Graduate of accredited veterinary technician program with greater than 2 years’ experience in veterinary emergency medicine*Please note, a transcript or diploma must be attached to this application to demonstrate graduation from the vet tech program.
SUBSTITUTIONS :Candidates can qualify without graduation from a veterinary technician program if they demonstrate 3+ years of veterinary emergency medicine experience.

Teaches and models high-quality nursing care. Assists in the training of new personnel by guiding the progress of HCS Trainee, VT I, VT II and hourly nursing staff through their training program. Ensures training is completed in the required timeframe. Regularly reports progress to supervisor including concerns in any employee performance. Collaborates with supervisor to plan and implement training strategies that will aid in improving employee performance. Provides on-site coaching, support and feedback to new and existing staff members and students regarding exceptional patient care, technical skills, pathophysiology and case management.

Monitors, follows and enforces all IMCU and VTH policies and procedures (including patient admit criteria, biosecurity and controlled substance regulations).
Actively participates in two-way communication with supervisor to maintain productivity and high morale in the Unit. Provides guidance in resolving minor disputes within IMCU . Provides timely updates and collaborates with supervisor regarding issues that need further resolution, including: conflicts with services, employee injury, issues requiring an Incident Report, unresolved minor disputes, etc. Communicates with supervisor, identifies problems, seeks appropriate input, develops solutions and recommends plans for improving process and procedure. Organizes and directs activities of unit, ensures adequate coverage for optimal nurse to patient ratios.
Oversees general Unit needs while on shift and guides staff through daily operational needs. This can include adequate stocking, pickup and cleanliness, equipment safety and maintenance, timely clean-up of soiled patients and cages, facilitating immediate interventions as they arise.
Ensures and guides timely updates of IMCU Case Log and accurate charges are submitted. Ensures adequate nursing staff coverage based on established nurse-to-patient ratios and acuity of caseload. Facilitates staggered staff break times to ensure adequate Unit coverage.
Guides and facilitates patient admits, according to IMCU Admit Criteria guidelines and changes in daily caseload based on nurse-to-patient ratios. Collaborates with CCS and VTH Services, Staff, Interns, Residents and Faculty regarding IMCU’s capabilities and patient needs.

This position works with IMCU technicians and staff, providing direct patient care and on-site guidance/oversight for efficient, optimal care including: patient assessment, prioritization of case management, treatments, serial monitoring, medical documentation, perioperative care and safe recovery post-anesthesia or heavy sedation. Identifies relevant clinical changes and recommends adjustments to patient’s management. Collaborates with staff, students, interns, residents and faculty clinicians to formulate adjustments based on patient status or response to therapies in a timely manner.
Provides clinical and technical expertise in IV catheter placement, urinary catheterization in both male and female patients, management of specialized wound drains/vacuum systems, management & use of feeding tubes, specialized/safe upright feeding protocols, suture techniques for invasive lines, focused bladder assessment with sonography ( FAST ), IV fluid and drug administration and Fear Free strategies for improved patient management. Assumes clinical leadership for recognizing patient decompensation and initiating immediate interventions including appropriate communication with services, emergency intervention and RECOVER CPR . Guides staff in regular/serial patient checks/assessments. Ensures completion of all patient treatments, cleanliness and comfort.
