  WHO WE ARE

  We are EssilorLuxottica, a global leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of ophthalmic lenses, frames and sunglasses. The Company brings together the complementary expertise of two industry pioneers, one in advanced lens technologies and the other in the craftsmanship of iconic eyewear, to create a vertically integrated business that is uniquely positioned to address the world’s evolving vision needs and the global demand of a growing eyewear industry.

  With over 180,000 dedicated employees in 150 countries driving our iconic brands, our people are creative, entrepreneurial and celebrated for their unique perspectives and individuality. Committed to vision, we enable people to “see more and be more” thanks to our innovative designs and lens technologies, exceptional quality and cutting-edge processing methods. Every day we impact the lives of millions by changing the way people see the world.

  EssilorLuxottica and Politecnico di Milano have created the first ever joint research center aimed at designing the smart glasses of the future (EssilorLuxottica Smart Eyewear Lab), capable not only of correcting vision defects and providing an object of style and protection for eye health, but also of offering new AR experiences (augmented reality), MR (mixed reality) and their superset XR (extended reality). A first example of smart glasses made by Luxottica are the Ray-Ban Stories.

  The overall project aims to develop smart glasses with the integration of new hardware (electronics, sensors, processors, interconnectivity) and new algorithm and software (advanced signal processing, data processing, artificial intelligence, machine learning) to add new functionalities on glasses.

  The EssilorLuxottica Smart Eyewear Lab in Milan will work as part of the Group’s R&D platform, already operating globally, with more than 30 R&D centers dedicated to vision care, eyewear design, sustainability and digital transformation, around 1,000 researchers and more than 11,000 patents. The EssilorLuxottica Smart Eyewear Lab will initially last five years and will employ when fully operational over 100 among researchers and scientists working closely together in a dedicated space within the Innovation District, which the Politecnico di Milano is currently developing in the Parco dei Gasometri, located in the Bovisa area in Milan.

  In this context, we are looking for a highly motivated Senior Principal Investigator in the Camera & Sensors research area for the development of innovative solutions to be applied on future smart glasses. As a Senior Principal Investigator and data scientistin this project, you will work closely with the research world (especially with Politecnico of Milan), in an international context, deal with new challenges to develop innovative solutions and algorithms using AI techniques applied on real data.

  The ideal candidate is a data scientist/R&D engineer with research and development skills, experienced in the world of smart wearable devices, capable of developing innovative solutions working in a team with heterogeneous skills, bringing his own contribution in the development of complex and highly innovative solutions. In particular, the ability to develop algorithms from time-series data and experience in development and testing of wearable systems for bio signals are required. Knowledge of embedded systems is also an essential skill.

  In particular, the data scientist will be included in the camera and sensors research stream of the Smart Eyewear Lab.

  AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES AND RELATED ACTIVITIES:

  Biosensing wearable research area : drive the research activities in the biosensing area by identifying relevant studies on the specific topic and implementing innovative solutions by comparing them with the state of the art devices;

  Perform dataset scouting and collection : Identify valuable data sources and manage their collection process by using prototypes developed in the Lab as well as commercially available devices;

  Signal processing techniques application : Develop and apply signal processing techniques to the data acquired on a large amount of subjects;

  AI algorithms building : scouting of the ideal AI algorithms for the application under development, model training (machine learning, deep learning, TinyML) and validation of the results.

  AI algorithm optimization : Software engineering for performance optimization and model deployment on prototype embedded platforms.
