Full Time Radiation Therapist
JOB SUMMARY
Assists physicians by treating patients with prescribed doses of ionizing radiation supplied and controlled through specialized radiation equipment according to established policies. Prepares treatment room, explains procedures to patients, positions patients, and administers treatments. Monitors patients during therapy sessions in order to ensure patients' comfort and to observe changes in patients' condition.
JOB DUTIES
Explains procedures to patients in order to ease fear and elicit cooperation.
Informs patients of possible treatment reactions and advises on care of irradiated body areas.
Positions patients under equipment in order to expose diseased body areas to ionizing radiation treatment and to protect all other body areas from radiation according to procedure and required standards of accuracy.
Observes patients during procedures and reports any change in condition, psychological or physiological, to physician or other appropriate patient care personnel.
Reinforce Radiation Oncologist’s advice to patients regarding side effects to treatment and care.
Performs daily warm-ups and performance improvement monitoring of all radiation-producing equipment.
Pours heated metal alloys into molds to fabricate radiation blocks used to define treatment fields on patients; cuts blocks utilizing power tools for final shaping.
Performs simulation duties for tumor localization, for brachytherapy dosimetry, and documents all necessary information as well as use of contrast media. Checks daily treatment MU and delivers prescribed dose. Responsible for assuring all calculations are double-checked prior to treatment and chart audited within three TX by physics.
Responsible for port films on a weekly basis or as needed and ensuring that any necessary changes are implemented.
Performs other duties consistent with purpose of job as directed.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES
Education : The level of knowledge normally acquired through completion of two to three years of occupationally specific education beyond high school or an Associate's degree in Radiography or closely related field plus three to six months of on-the-job training and orientation.
Licensure : Registration required as a Radiation Therapy Technologist.
Experience : Three to six months of on-the-job training and orientation.
