Devices Reliability team at Microsoft is looking for a creative, talented and experienced Quality & Reliability Engineer II with experience in Mechanical, Reliability, Materials or related engineering fields. The candidate’s primary responsibility will be the development and implementation of methodologies and techniques to evaluate and enhance component or product reliability. This role may require the candidate to engage on multiple products and with multiple cross-functional teams. A skill-set covering engineering analysis, problem solving, communication and external partner management is required.

Responsibilities
Evaluate Quality and Reliability of device enclosures made of metals, plastics, composite materials.
Understand impact of manufacturing processes on mechanical and cosmetic reliability aspects of device enclosures.
Evaluate reliability of adhesives.
Develop and execute reliability qualification plans based on product lifecycle requirements while interfacing with design and manufacturing partners and external suppliers.
Develop, with other functional disciplines, customer usage models and translate understanding of the customer into practical reliability test specifications.
Standardize methodologies and processes for increased effectiveness of qualification plans.
Participate in component vendor selection activity and drive component qualification activity for components that are critical to Microsoft product requirements.
Use knowledge of manufacturing process capability as well as system-level performance requirements to establish Critical-to-Reliability performance metrics.
Monitor product performance in the field, understand customer-facing product issues and drive failure analysis and corrective action with the appropriate partner engineering teams.
Perform telemetry analyses using in-house tools.
Develop and maintain data pipelines, architectures, and databases that enable data extraction, transformation and loading.
Perform data analysis and modeling using statistical and machine learning methods to identify trends, patterns and insights.
Create reports and dashboards to present data in a clear and compelling way to stake holders.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
7+ years relevant technical engineering experience
OR Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience.
OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience.
1+ years experience with computational analysis and numerical simulations, static and dynamic mechanical simulations including nonlinear material models, and statistical techniques to analyze test and field data to estimate product life cycle performance.
1+ years experience working with data engineering tools and languages such as, but not limited to, SQL, Azure, Data Explorer, Python.
1+ years experience with accelerated life tests, fatigue mechanisms to evaluate product reliability.
Preferred Qualifications:
Doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Aeronautical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or equivalent experience in any other related field.
Experience and/or knowledge with Reliability principles such as understanding customer usage, FMEA, and Physics-of-Failure concepts to develop and implement accelerated tests to identify and mitigate risks and qualify engineering designs during product development.
Capable of applying Design-of-Experiments concepts to identify Critical-to-Quality parameters and develop robust evaluation plans based on them.
Have a good understanding of fundamental properties and characteristics of materials used in cutting-edge consumer electronics products.
Ability to summarize test data and perform data analysis in accordance with product design requirements.
Preparing test reports and communicating results and findings to facilitate root cause analysis and resolution when failures occur.
Reliability Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $94,300 - $182,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $120,900 - $198,600 per year.
