Our UPMC Hamot laboratory is excited to welcome your application to our QA/QC Coordinator role! This hybrid position coordinates our quality management, safety, and regulatory activities for the laboratories of the hospital and other areas including clinics, satellites, special function labs and point-of-care testing. The successful candidate will act as the liaison between nursing, quality, and regulatory departments of the hospitals, assisting lab managers and directors, and supervising technologists.
Responsibilities:
Quality Management
Teach and monitor compliance to safety regulations.
Investigate all safety accidents and incidents that occur in the laboratory areas.
Create, revise and maintain policies relating to personnel requirements, quality assurance, quality control, proficiency testing, and lab safety.
Distribute to all system-wide laboratories to use or modify for use; update and revise when federal, state, and accrediting agencies change the standards and regulations.
Maintain laboratory safety manuals.
Assist creating and maintaining the Laboratory Disaster Plan.
Monitor quarterly fire drills in laboratories, annual laboratory, safety inspections, and hazardous and biological waste disposal.
Personnel Engagement
Supervise quality assurance technologists.
Teach and monitor performance, schedule and review activities.
Interview for vacant positions, select candidates, administer corrective action, or termination if necessary.
Coordinate purchase of proficiency testing materials and monitor performance.
Data Organization
Obtain certifications and permits for all laboratories and maintain records of all technical personnel and laboratory testing (including instrumentation and methodology).
Research regulatory requirements, prepare and submit reports, assist with quality initiatives.
Investigate instances of poor performance and ensure continued compliance.
Inspection and Accreditation Activity
Schedule and organize all inspections and accreditation activities and maintain records of all activities on file for reference.
Coordinate inspection teams, assist with distribution of checklists, transportation, accommodations, education and assignments and activities to ensure compliance with the requirements of the UPMC's Quality Improvement Policy, state and federal agencies and accreditation agencies.
Participate as appropriate on various committees related to safety and regulatory compliance as requested and needed.
Contact, review reports, and advise system laboratories in regard to quality, proficiency, safety, personnel and regulatory issues.
Required
BS degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program AND certification as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) within two years from hire date, OR
BS degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science AND categorical certification for the specific specialty by the ASCP, OR
BS degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science AND at least 2 years of experience in a role equivalent to that of a medical laboratory technician in a clinical laboratory.
AND
5 years' experience as a Medical Technologist and previous experience with QA plans and QC policies, experience with proficiency testing, and good writing skills are required.Preference
Prior supervisory experience
Knowledge of accreditation processes and regulations
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
ASCP certification in medical technology or ASCP categorical certification preferred.
