This is structural and craft work in maintenance and repair of automotive and emergency vehicles and other specialized equipment. The primary emphasis is on the safety and maintenance of POLICE and other LAW ENFORCEMENT TYPE VEHICLES, including the installation and removal of Radio Communication and Audio Visual Equipment, etc.

Primary responsibilities include:

Diagnose and repair police communication equipment to maintain mobile data terminals, printers, adapters, and modems.

Operates wreckers and ramp trucks to recover vehicles containing evidence for criminal investigations.

Operates oxyacetylene, plasma cutter, metal pro devises and electric welding to repair, design, and fabricate equipment.

Installs, repairs and adjusts emergency lights and sirens, alternators, throttle body (TBI), sequential fuel injection (SFI), fuel delivery and electrical systems to ensure safe, efficient operation of fleet vehicles and related emergency equipment.

Diagnose, reprogram and repair components of electronic and mechanical instruments using the latest computer software to maintain fully equipped and operable vehicles.

Organizes, requisitions, and maintains supplies and equipment to ensure adequate inventory.

Writes repair orders for each vehicle serviced, listing all parts, labor, description of work done, and vehicle information to establish and document vehicle and equipment history.

Diagnoses, repairs and rebuilds pursuit vehicle engines, transmissions and other drive train components to maintain a safe and dependable fleet of vehicles.

Skills or knowledge required:

Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine operation and repair.

Knowledge of hydraulic /electric (ABS) and air brake system operation and repair.

Knowledge of hydraulic pumps, motors, and system operation and repair.

Knowledge of steering and suspension system parts, maintenance, and repair.

Knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools of the automotive mechanic trade.

Knowledge of computerized diagnostic systems.

Knowledge of emergency software, computer and laptop systems.

Knowledge of computer networking procedures.

Knowledge of OSHA rules and regulations pertinent to operator and passenger safety and emergency equipment modification methods and techniques.

Knowledge of state inspection laws and regulations.

Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the mechanics trade.

Knowledge of vehicle and equipment preventive maintenance procedures and schedules.

Knowledge of basic cutting and welding techniques.

Ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical and hydraulic failures in vehicles and equipment.

Ability to repair a variety of mechanical and emergency vehicle equipment.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to operate heavy equipment.

Ability to work independently in the repair and maintenance of automotive and associated emergency equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

(Entry level knowledges, skills, and/or abilities may be acquired through,BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO the following coursework/training and/or experience).

Four (4) years experience and/or education in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of vehicles

Licensing/Registration/Certification Requirements: (These must be met by all employees prior to attaining permanent status in this class).

Possession of a valid Class C motor vehicle license as issued by the State of Maine.

Possession of a Maine Inspection License.

Must be able to pass a Criminal Background Check
