Adult Inpatient Psychiatric serves acute and chronically mentally ill patientsby providing high quality psychiatric clinical and therapeutic care. The unitspecializes in administering care to adult patients who display challengingbehaviors and/or who may have comorbid medical diagnoses that cannot beaccommodated by other mental health facilities in Colorado. The adult unitcomprises 57 beds over a span of 3 units. The multiple units allow for thedevelopment of a diverse set of nursing and therapeutic skills includingde-escalation techniques, therapeutic awareness and communication. Staffingratios include a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5 and behavioral health techration of 1:7. These ratios create safe, dignified, individualizedpatient care. Job SummaryWith over 700 employees, Behavioral Health Services (BHS) at DenverHealth is a large and rapidly expanding department that provides psychiatriccare for patients in community, emergency, inpatient, justice,medical, mobile, and outpatient settings. All physicians at DenverHealth have an academic appointment at the University of Colorado School ofMedicine. This position provides crisis psychiatric evaluation and care withinPsychiatric Emergency Services (PES). The PES is Colorado's only 24/7team of board-certified psychiatrists and consists of 10 beds staffed by sixfull-time psychiatrists and a PA. The service also includes a mobile crisisteam and provides about 4,000 encounters annually. The service providescritical community needs and is poised for significant growth with upcomingchanges in the way behavioral health is regulated and funded in the state.This position typically involves working 3 to 4 shifts per week and,therefore, also offers excellent opportunities for work-life balance.
Essential Functions:
Obtains relevant medical histories, makes appropriate diagnoses,implements and directs effective psychiatric treatments including duringhigh-risk and/or life-threatening conditions including during pregnancy andperi-partum periods, malignant catatonia, neuroleptic malignantsyndrome, and serotonin syndrome. (70%)Assesses and mitigates the risk of suicide or violence among patients at riskdue to psychiatric illness, including schizophrenia, bipolar,depressive, anxiety, substance use disorders, and personality disorders. (10%)Teaches medical students and advanced trainees from other health disciplinesincluding in nationally accredited training programs. Consults withnon-psychiatric medical providers in the care of patients with psychiatricdisorders. (10%)Applies treatment statutes for involuntary psychiatric and/or substance usedisorder treatments. Interprets the results of relevant laboratory andimagining studies and applies them to the diagnosis and treatment ofpsychiatric symptoms. (10%)
Education:
Doctorate Degree Graduate of an accredited medial school. Required
