About Program Coordinator for Overnight Camp - Hamden, NY

  This position will serve as the Program Coordinator for Overnight Camp at 4-H Camp Shankitunk. Camp Shankitunk is a traditional summer camp located in Delhi, NY. 4-H Camp Shankitunk operates both a day camp program (ages 6+) and an overnight program (ages 8-16) for youth in the summer and hires approximately 50-60 seasonal camp staff members. 4-H Camp Shankitunk is owned by Delaware County and operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension Delaware County. The Health Office Coordinator is responsible for implementing all medical requirements described in the camp safety plan submitted to the Department of Health and ensuring compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws.

  The Program Coordinator for Overnight Camp provides administrative leadership for overnight camp counselors/staff and campers and ensures that the Overnight Camping program runs safely. Develop and coordinate camp activities during cabin time, lunch, rest, etc. Set goals with overnight camp counselors and foster teamwork to achieve goals. Facilitate staff meetings to share ideas, delegate tasks, and ensure clear communication within groups. Responsible for ensuring that all overnight camp counseling staff members are accounted for during scheduled times. Provide regular feedback to Camp Counselors and Program Assistants. Participate in the general planning of the overnight camp program. Assist with all camp program activities and other camp-wide activities as assigned. Assist in implementing safety and health regulations. Participate in staff meetings and training events as scheduled. This position is also responsible for administrative duties, including cabin assignments, parent communications, and photocopying schedules and rosters each week. Assist with program scheduling and management. Responsible for coordinating and operating evening programs and assisting in other camp activities as needed. Assist with program and staff evaluation processes.

  Required Qualifications:

  Must be at least 18 years old to comply with NYS Department of Health regulations.

  Experience working with children and conflict resolution.

  Interest, knowledge, and skills in the specific program area.

  Ability to teach, supervise and motivate staff.

  Strong organizational and leadership skills.

  Emotional maturity, good health, and vitality.

  Ability to work cooperatively with campers and other staff members.

  Willingness to learn.

  Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.

  Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as appropriate.

  Preferred Qualifications:

  21 years of age preferred.

  College degree in education or another relevant field preferred.

  Two years of experience supervising others desirable.

  In-depth knowledge of youth camping activities desirable.

  Position Responsibilities & Essential Functions

  Program Assessment – 10%

  Regularly observe and evaluate program staff and provide constructive feedback.

  Regularly inspect program space and equipment for safe operation.

  Program Development – 10%

  Research, develop and prepare educational resources (e.g., goals, lesson plans, skill-building activities, hands-on projects, experiments, etc.) for camp programming staff.

  Program Delivery – 5%

  Support assigned counselor staff to run program area activities.

  Teach program area activities as needed.

  Support all-camp activities such as evening programs, rain/heat day programs, flag ceremonies, Cook-Out, evening campfire, and closing ceremony.

  Assume primary leadership for evening program games and operations.

  Program Evaluation – 10%

  Support evaluation processes for program and camper satisfaction.

  Prepare final program evaluation reports with future recommendations.

  Collect year-end program inventory lists and supply request form for the next season.

  Administrative Direction – 30%

  Assist in the development and implementation of staff training activities during camp orientation.

  Provide highly complex administrative leadership to plan educational programs.

  Provide leadership to ensure that the creation of the Camp’s Plan of Work is within the scope of the statewide Plan of Work.

  Assist in the process of interpreting the 4-H Camp Shankitunk program direction to plan educational programs.

  Lead problem- solving and conflict-resolution processes that effectively address camper and staff concerns, behavioral problems, and personal conflicts.

  Plan the delivery of established positive youth development based on 4-H Essential Elements, the Search Institute, and other research -based information.

  Support community-oriented camp culture that emphasizes acceptance, cooperation, and empathy

  Assist the Camp Director in staff guidance and communication, including conducting staff meetings, directing staff evaluation processes, implementing performance improvement strategies as needed, and recognizing outstanding performance.

  Administrative Management – 25%

  Ensure compliance with all camp policies and procedures that protect camper and staff health and safety.

  Ensure program staff maintains high health and safety standards in all program settings and activities.

  Communicate regularly with program staff to proactively identify and address areas of concern regarding health and safety.

  Administer the daily program schedule effectively, balancing activities and daily routines, ensuring adequate staff coverage, and adjusting for weather-related or other exigencies.

  With Camp Director and other Program Coordinators (Day Camp) develop daily and weekly schedules of educational and recreational activities that offer variety, balance, and challenge

  Assist in implementing evaluation processes for staff performance, program and youth development outcomes, and camper satisfaction.

  Administrative Coordination/Operation – 5%

  With Program Assistants, ensure completion of inventory of all camp program equipment and supplies, prepare program area during pre-camp orientation, and order program materials through the camp requisition process as needed.

  As needed, assist with weekly camper arrival and departure processes, camper orientation, and other functions.

  Accept and compile items for the “Camp History Binder” for archival purposes.

  Professional Improvement – 5%

  In cooperation with Supervisor, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and address changes and Association priorities.

  Collaborate in activities that support Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

  Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions

  Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.

  Be familiar with and follow applicable federal, state, and local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement, and standards.

  Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.

  Position Details

  This is a full-time, exempt, temporary position that will run from June 1st - August 9th. The salary will range from $3,750 - $5,000. Salary is commensurate with experience, certifications, responsibilities, and availability.

  The position will work at 4-H Camp Shankitunk in Delhi, NY. On-site residence during program required. Overnight accommodations & meals provided(Sunday - Friday). Age 21+ preferred.
