  Job Description:Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

  The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (https://www.cals.iastate.edu/) (CALS) at Iowa State University seeks a Professor and Associate Dean for Global Engagement to lead the Office for Global Engagement (https://global.ag.iastate.edu/) . The successful candidate must be a visionary leader with demonstrated capacity to lead international teaching, research, Extension/outreach and service programs in collaboration with campus leaders from across all disciplines in the college. The Associate Dean will have responsibility for oversight of the areas within the Office for Global Engagement including, but not limited to, international research and development activities, study abroad and domestic travel programs, and institutional agreements and programs. The successful candidate will support and engage with faculty on new and innovative projects with globally engaged partners from academia, industry and government. The Associate Dean will be part of the leadership for the Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods with programs in Uganda; the Fork in the Road Station and programs in St John, USVI; Study USA programs in collaboration with the Office for Academic Innovation, and key linkages to the college-wide academic program, Global Resource Systems. As part of the Dean’s leadership team, the Associate Dean will engage frequently with academic department chairs and faculty, and the college offices for Research and Discovery, Facilities and Operations, Extension and Outreach, Personnel and Finance, and Academic Innovation.

  With a current staff of eight, plus student workers, the Global Engagement Office enables many activities, including more than 400 students each year to travel and study, representing more than 15% of the college’s student population, with a goal to grow. CALS faculty and students have traveled to 96 countries and more than a dozen U.S. states, and host nearly 100 international delegation visits to campus each year. The college works closely with a wide array of globally oriented public and private organizaitons and NGOs worldwide, including in Iowa. Annual fundraising and grant-getting in the international context for the college often surpasses $10 miilion a year, and several of the global programs are substantially supported by endowments.

  The Associate Dean will be expected to advance and promote a culture of academic excellence, access and service. The Global Programs work relates to undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff, external funding, high-impact/value-added activities, and pursuit of research and engagement in the global context. The successful candidate will enable the college to continue to achieve and further develop its global engagement and bring a deep commitment and experience in globally relevant work and experience.

  Specific responsibilities of the position include:

  Provide visionary leadership to serve the needs of faculty, staff, students, stakeholders and citizens to fulfill the land-grant missions of the departments, college and university;

  Serve the college in accomplishing its missions, and be a collaborative member of the college leadership team, across all missions, academic departments, and centers;

  Communicate effectively the mission, vision and strengths of the Office for Global Engagement in the college, across the university, and to external stakeholders and collaborators in the public and private sectors;

  Encourage and foster interdisciplinary collaboration across departments, centers, and institutes within and external to the university; Ensure sound fiscal and budgetary management to achieve the mission of the Office for Global Engagement and comply with college and university-level policies and practices related to fiscal responsibility and management;

  Foster an environment of collegiality in which all faculty, students and staff work to realize the college’s purposes and are held accountable for their performance;

  Keep faculty and staff involved in the Office for Global Engagement informed about policies and expectations that may affect them;

  Stimulate and facilitate excellence and professional development in all aspects of work of the office;

  Maintain availability to faculty, students, staff, and stakeholders, and participate in representational activities on behalf of the office and the college, including after-hours and with domestic and international (including to Africa, Europe, Caribean, etc.) travel as necessary;

  Recruit and retain productive and effective people in all parts of the college, and actively foster activities that enable local-to-global engagement, innovation and entrepreneurship, and sustainability;

  Enhance a broad array of undergraduate and graduate students, and faculty and staff, to be prepared to excel in college programming, cross-disciplinary thinking, innovation and leadership, and to attain resources through extramural funding by encouraging a culture of collaboration and innovation, team science, and investigator excellence;

  Nurture and maintain effective relationships and work with external stakeholders and alumni, and partner and donor relations, including fundraising, grant-getting, and stewardship.

  Required Minimum Qualifications:

  Ph.D. or equivalent in a discipline relevant to the college;

  Existing scholarly accomplishments that qualify for tenure at the rank of Professor in a CALS academic department;

  Significant international experience.

  Preferred Qualifications:

  To show evidence of demonstrated leadership in the following -

  Organizational budget/fiscal management (e.g., of an academic department, college or university-level unit);

  Personnel management, including recruitment, advancement and retention of faculty and staff;

  Advancing teaching, undergraduate and graduate program planning and development, and student success;

  Advancing research enterprises and collaborations, and research experience relevant to the CALS mission in an international context;

  Advancing Extension, outreach and service enterprises and collaborations;

  Working with external stakeholders and donors, building and expanding partnerships, and coalitions with public and private sector organizations.

  Position Details:

  Initial Associate Dean appointment is five years and is renewable with a formal review during year four. This appointment serves in an at-will position at the pleasure of the Dean. The person in this position will serve a 12-month full-time appointment while in the role of associate dean, with an accompanying 9-month tenured faculty position if no longer serving in this role. This position has expected percentages of 85% administrative responsibility, and 15% in contributions towards teaching, research, outreach and/or service duties. Proposed start date by August 16, 2024 (negotiable).
