ITW Drawform is a $200M USD Division within Illinois Tool Works’ Automotive Segment. It has an excellent reputation for delivering top results and exceeding customer expectations within the deep draw and aerosol can industries. The Product Development Engineer will lead the Automotive Powertrain component innovation function within the division. This newly created position is a member of ITW Drawform Division's new product launch team and will require frequent interaction with both internal and external stakeholders.
The Product Development Engineer role has a high degree of focus on resolving customer pain points with pioneering solutions leading to intellectual property developments. The position will conceptualize, generate, and support the development of product concepts in line with the Division’s growth strategy. These activities include investigating new or emerging technologies, developing innovations, ideating patentable concepts, developing these concepts into commercially viable product offerings, design simulation, design validation, and documenting related work instructions.
Essential Functions:
· Using an “inventor” mentality, actively participates in the generation and implementation of ideas & projects which provide product solutions based on the division’s core competencies.
· Creates 3D models and 2D Drawings for innovative product concepts supporting design release for Serial Production.
· Support FEA and CFD analysis for NPD and NPI efforts on as needed basis.
· Perform Benchmarking and Product Breakdowns for concept generation.
· Wins support for ideas and brings new technologies to market by translating solution concepts into real products.
· Analyzes proposed technological solutions to not only understand how mechanisms work, but to also develop methods of effectively testing and evaluating technologies.
· Identifies relevant data sources for information about emerging technologies to gain an understanding of how things work; may be required to dismantle products or testing equipment to figure out how they function.
· Liaises with and presents to customers, suppliers, other ITW divisions, and internal commercial, engineering and operations stakeholders to ensure proper rollout to customers.
· Stays current on customer and industry trends.
· Proposes product test methods and drafts product design specifications.
· Meets project plan objectives within budget.
Qualifications:
· Bachelors or Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering required
· 3-5 years of full-time experience in engineering product development
· Exposure to automotive component or metal design release using SolidWorks or similar software preferred
· Exceptional analytical thinking/critical thinking abilities
· Excellent research skills
· Prior successful product development and launch experience, which was the result of working on a high performing, cross functional team
Experience using Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools like SolidWorks PDM/SolidWorks Manage.
· Experience in various Design for Excellence (DFx) methods like
o Design for Assembly (DFA),
o Design for Manufacturing (DFM),
o Design for Reliability (DFR),
o Design for Testability (DFT),
o Design for Cost (DFC),
o Design for Regulatory Compliance,
o Design for Supply Chain (DFSC),
o Design for Serviceability and Maintainability (DFSM) and
o Design for Innovation (DFI)
· Curious, hands on, and inventive approach to problem solving.
· Knowledge of applicable design technology, prototyping, specialist test equipment and programming helpful.
· Awareness of deep draw process is helpful but not necessary.
