Principle Scientist Makeup/External Innovation
This position reports into the Skin Health & Beauty R&D organization and is based in Skillman, NJ.

What You Will Do
The senior scientist will lead regional and global projects for Makeup and Skin Health external led innovation products and will be directly responsible for new product formulation when applicable, process development and scale-up activities coordination to execute time-bound projects. This candidate will rely on strong technical skills to independently execute projects with hands-on involvement, and will need to incorporate strategic consumer, category, and business insights to deliver business goals. Strong communication skills together with the ability to manage complexity are must-have prerequisites. Ability to manage routine organizational processes; and demonstrate prudent risk-taking and decision-making skills are essential components of this role in providing guidance and solutions to technical problems. Ability to coordinate with external innovation partners to execute from inception to launch are key. Technical writing skills are highly desired as they may draft and execute, technical reports, patent fillings, and peer reviewed manuscripts as appropriate. Responsibilities might also include coaching junior scientists.
Key Responsibilities
Guide the external innovation partnership to and develop makeup/skin health prototypes and establish technical expertise by integrating knowledge from category leads for product execution.
Coordinate and implement all documentation necessary for product launch.
Build relationship with External Innovation partners to anticipate skin health future need state.
Coordinate innovation share outs for skin health with our External Innovation Partners.
Drive streamlining and improvement of our current External Innovation strategy and processes.
Plan and support documentation and execution of GMP pilots and trials, safety, claim-support consumer testing, and other clinical and non-clinical evaluations.
Collaborate with project teams (Packaging, Manufacturing, Marketing, Project Management, Claims, Consumer Science, Safety, Tox, Micro, Analytical, Sourcing, Raw Material Center, etc) to ensure all project deliverables are met and on-time.
Attend and provide active input to project meetings and project related documentation.
Have the proactive foresight of potential project obstacles and develop risk mitigation plans and troubleshoot formulation, processing, and scale-up issues.
Analyze consumer and market trends and understand the landscape of products in the category to improve uniqueness and differentiation of products to delight the consumer.
Collaborate with suppliers to bring in new technologies.
Competently handle day-to-day work challenges and adapt to changes in the work environment.
The scope of work will include:
External innovation coordination of product concepts from inception to launch, leading formulation where applicable for product scope.
Lead key external relationship collaboration and innovation share out to skin health organization.
Optimize external innovation processes and new partner qualification and onboarding.
Identification of critical process parameters at the lab, pilot, and full manufacturing scales
Full knowledge of executing the technical aspects of projects and coordination with external partners to meet deliverables.
Interacting with and/or leading cross-functional teams to implement timely new product introductions.
Driving technical resolutions in collaborated formula development initiatives.
Troubleshooting product issues under tight and sometimes compressed timelines.
Qualifications
What We Are Looking For
Education:
A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of related experience (academic or industry) is required (Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or other related science or engineering subject area is preferred), or a Master's degree with a minimum of 2 years of experience or a PhD Degree in a relevant field.
Experience and Skills:
Experience with formulation is strongly preferred
A good technical foundation of formulated products including color cosmetics, OTCs, emulsions, surfactants, suspensions, an understanding of material chemistry and process equipment is strongly preferred
Excellent oral and written communication skills are required
Solid MS Office (Word and Excel) proficiency is required
Experience in formulating mineral and chemical sunscreens/facial moisturizers with SPF is a plus
Process development/process scale-up experience is preferred
Experience working with external manufacturing and technical project management is preferred
Familiarity with cGMP and other regulatory requirements is preferred
Other:
Must be proficient in English. This position is based Skillman, NJ, and will require up to 10% travel both domestic and international travel.
