The Cosmic Team, part of the M365 Substrate organization, is seeking a Principal Software Enginnering Manager to lead innovation in developer agility and safe change management on our global-scale, Kubernetes-based service platform.
Many of Microsoft’s key services are embracing the container-based approach for running services and our Kubernetes-based service platform, Cosmic, is expanding rapidly. In this role you will be responsible for designing and shaping our Cosmic service platform to meet organizational change management standards, increase safety of change delivery, and improve overall developer agility. You will work extensively with Microsoft Azure technologies while also using industry standard open source such as Kubernetes and related components. You will provide effective mentoring, coaching and technical leadership for a team of engineers, and will also collaborate with numerous teams across Microsoft to achieve results.
Responsibilities
Cultivate a team culture that embraces Microsoft’s values of Respect, Accountability, and Integrity.
Drive the design and implementation of platform features and enhancements that improve developer agility and safety for our Kubernetes cluster fleet.
Partner with other teams to understand their service needs and requirements and provide them with platform support and guidance.
Measure and monitor platform performance and reliability and report on platform agility and safety goals.
Research and adopt new technologies and best practices to keep our platform ahead of the curve.
Build and mentor a team of talented engineers, supporting their career growth and professional development.
Qualifications
Required/Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
OR equivalent experience.
5+ years of experience designing, building and supporting highly scalable, highly available and fault tolerant workloads on Azure or similar platforms.
5+ years of Engineering leadership experience in delivering complex, time sensitive initiatives across organizational boundaries.
Additional or Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
OR equivalent experience.
3+ years people management experience, including mentoring and coaching.
5+ years experience with Kubernetes.
Software Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
