Position Summary:
This role is central to Swagelok Product’s innovation efforts, primarily focusing on materials development and supply chain optimization. As a Principal Polymers Materials Engineer, you'll drive technical innovation by conducting hands-on experimentation and utilizing advanced laboratory techniques to analyze material structures and chemical properties. Priority will be given to candidates familiar with the operation of the following analytical instruments: SEM/EDS, FTIR, TGA, TMA, CSR, DSC, Optical Microscopy, and able to develop new methods and implement strategies to solve both routine and novel problems. Your objective is to generate fast and actionable insights which support the development of new products and improve existing ones while elucidating process-product performance relationships through scientific methodologies, laboratory techniques, and digital design tools.
Collaborating closely with the Global Sourcing team, your aim will be to mitigate supply chain risks and shape strategies aligned with business objectives. This involves maximizing product availability through diverse supply chain options while safeguarding Swagelok’s product performance and quality. You will build and maintain technical peer networks with major polymer manufacturers, supply chain technical personnel, universities, professional societies, and national labs. The role demands familiarity with both chemistry and processes used to produce engineering polymers, especially fluoropolymers, fluoroelastomers, PEEK, thermosets, coatings, nitriles, EPDM, neoprenes, PFA, PCTFE, PAI, PC, PC/ABS, Nylon, PP,PEI, PE,PBT,POM, PU, PI,and custom composite blends of such. Intimate knowledge of the specific chemistries involved of the compounds specified is required to make judgement regarding chemical compatibility and failure analysis support of all above listed compounds.
This role serves as the key technical authority in polymeric materials selection pertinent to Swagelok products and processes. This role emphasizes collaboration across Engineering, Manufacturing, Sourcing, Compliance, and Quality teams to bolster product development, enhance quality, and mitigate supply chain risks. Additionally, it involves mentoring and training engineers and technicians in pertinent engineering practices. Training initiatives may extend beyond internal teams to the sales network and external clients. Your experience in project management will be pivotal in completing assignments, coordinating functional area activities, and contributing to corporate cross-functional projects.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Demonstrates and conveys valuable knowledge based on previously acquired work experience and training.
Prepares/writes technical reports to document solutions and recommendations.
Advises others in company how to solve materials-related problems.
Assures designed products meet project objectives, are safe and maintain engineering and design practices meeting the appropriate internal and industry standards.
Demonstrates familiarity with properties for a wide range of materials (emphasis on polymers, elastomers, and lubricants).
Demonstrates an awareness of current developments in areas of expertise.
Uses appropriate tools to establish relationship between microstructure-property-performance for materials and products.
Able to leverage statistical methods and tools for problem solving.
Can lead larger team efforts to solve problems that involve multi-departmental or interdisciplinary effort.
Coordinates the work of technicians, engineers and others who assist on specific assignments.
Exhibits a working knowledge of industry standards and organizations (e.g., ASTM, ASME, ISO/EN, FDA, USP, NORSOK, BfArM) that will be used to create/revise internal material specifications and procedures.
Identifies and recommends new laboratory equipment and software needs; initiates activities leading to purchase (i.e., conducts cost-benefit studies, creates/submits P.O. requests, etc.)
Technically develops others including engineers and technicians.
Supports assessment and definition phases of Technology Development projects working with Marketing and end-users.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
Required:
• Ph.d. with 5 years of relevant industry experience, or MS with 10 years of relevant industry experience. (Academic training in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or Materials Engineering).
• Some formal exposure to areas outside of own department/areas of expertise.
• Recognized as a resource in areas of expertise.
Preferred:
• Advanced knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry, materials science, and other common engineering disciplines.
• Ability to solve complex problems.
• Ability to effectively work on and complete multiple/simultaneous projects.
• Uses advanced problem solving techniques/methods and proven technology to make decisions, both within groups and independently.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Strong computer and office software skills.
• Ability to organize data and files for rapid access.
• Demonstrates broad understanding of a wide variety of material properties, including metals and polymers, and efficiently applies such knowledge to problem solving tasks.
*Suggested knowledge: It is a benefit if the candidate has acquired a good understanding of the functionality and performance of Swagelok products, and has a good grasp of the manufacturing processes that are used to produce and assemble Swagelok products.
