What you’ll be doing: As our School Principal for our Preschool program in Tonawanda, NY, you will be planning, developing, organizing, and managing all programs and services provided within the school building to which he/she is assigned. The Principal is responsible for the quality, quantity and continuity of services provided to students.

Develops policies and administrative procedures, standards, and guidelines consistent with laws, regulations and guidelines of various funding and regulatory bodies including the NYS Education Department, Office of the Medicaid Inspector General, Office of Children and Family Services as well as county driven requirements per county contracts. Also assimilates overall agency policies that apply to the Education Program.
Directs the Assistant Principal in ensuring continuity of educational programs and care of students served. Develops and maintains positive working relationships with other school and agency personnel as well as community agencies with the goal of providing high quality educational and therapeutic services to children with disabilities.
Participates with the Chief Operating Officer in forecasting and planning program services. Participates and is responsible for activities surrounding the development of the program budget, in conjunction with the agency’s fiscal department, including determining financial and physical resources needed to implement services.
What we need from you:
Master’s degree in special educationPLUS(6) years of experience with children who are developmentally disabled and a minimum of five years’ experience in a supervisory capacity.
PLUS
New York State Permanent or Professional Certification is required. New York State SAS, SDA, SBL, or SDL is required.

Position Summary:
The Principal plans, develops, organizes and manages all programs and services provided within the school building to which he/she is assigned. Development of program budget and the accountability to the budget are part of the duties of this position. The Principal is responsible for the quality, quantity and continuity of services provided to students. In conjunction with the maintenance team, the Principal is responsible for ensuring that the building provides a safe and clean environment for students, families and staff. The Principal participates with other administrative staff of the agency in the development and implementation of agency goals, values, policies, and procedures.
Reporting Relationship:
Receives direction from the Chief Operating Officer. Provides supervision to the Assistant Principal(s), teachers, teacher assistants, as well as clerical and ancillary staff assigned to the building for which they are responsible for.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Monitors expenditures against projected budget and works with the fiscal office in the development of any needed revisions to the budget. Approves requests for purchases and expenditures.
Works closely with all other Education Program administrative personnel to ensure cohesiveness in meeting the needs of the students in the program.
Responsible for assigning classroom coverage with the building, when classroom staff are absent.
Participates with colleagues and Human Resources in interviewing, hiring, counseling, disciplining and termination of employees. Determines placements of new hires
Formulates a plan with the Assistant Principal and assumes overall responsibility for, and provides leadership, in striving for optimum effectiveness of children’s services.
Collaborates closely with the Coordinator of IEPs, Admissions, and Compliance in the evaluation and subsequent admission of students to the education program. Oversees the development of the assignments of classroom enrollments/listings, based on the students’ needs that the Assistant Principal implements. Ensures that each classroom is appropriately staff per regulation.
Responsible for direct supervision of the Assistant Principal, clerical and ancillary staff housed within the building. Directs clerical team with regard to formulating systems of support that result in the most effective operation of the school.
Directs the development of, and assures that staff receives, in-service training on topics that address regulatory information, new methodologies, curriculum development and other like topics related to working with children with developmental disabilities.
Has meetings scheduled and organized in order to impart information to Education Department Staff.
Responsible for ensuring that procedures for safety and security measures within the building are documented and implemented, and that the information is relayed by respective supervisors to all pertinent staff/tenants. Participates in Safety Committee Meetings and works in conjunction with the maintenance team to ensure that the building is in compliance with any safety and code regulations.
Serves as the liaison for any tenants within the building and maintains communication with tenants.
Maintains positive interactions and communications with parents, staff and colleagues.
Ensures that performance evaluations are completed by appropriate supervisory personnel for staff under his/her supervision.
Works with pertinent staff to ensure availability of supervisory staff in the participation in other school activities as needed, such as touring families, community groups or other individuals.
Conducts outreach activities that target community collaborators in order for Education Program students to have opportunities for Integration with “typical” peers. Conducts site tours to facilitate this process.
In conjunction with the Assistant Principal and the Coordinator for IEPs, Admissions, and Compliance, actively works with school districts, clinics and other community resources in keeping them informed about the services that the Education Program has to offer.
Participates in district Committee on Preschool/School Age Special Education when the Coordinator of IEPs, Admissions, and Compliance or the Assistant Principal is not available.
Attends community meetings relating to the education of special education students. Represents the Education Program in community group committees, and is an active contributing member with the special education community.
Participates in agency meetings that involve administrative activities/information. Disseminates pertinent information to staff, as appropriate, to apprise them of upcoming and ongoing activities of the agency.
Participates and supports extracurricular activities and events for the Organization for Parents and Teachers (OPT) and the agency as a whole.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:

Exhibits sensitivity and respect for children with disabilities and their families at all times. Knowledge of educational needs and programming for students who are cognitively delayed, are on the autism spectrum, multiply challenged, medically frail or in need of behavioral supports.
Must have knowledge of regulatory requirements of the New York State Education Department, New York State Department of Health, Office of the Medicaid Inspector General, the Office of Children and Family Services and the Office of People with Developmental Disabilities as it relates to the program.
Must have working knowledge of CPSE and CSE operations and regulations. Demonstrate the ability to lead a group of individuals in working toward desired goals. Have the ability to utilize a computer to generate needed documents, reports and spreadsheets and have the ability to oversee that there is efficient use of technology of staff under his/her supervision.
Essential Job Functions:
Physical demands and Exposure Risk outlined on attached form (A)The ability to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, sit, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, climb flight of stairs and be able to lift/transfer a minimum of 15 lbs. and in case of emergency over 50 lbs. Must have the ability to see, hear, listen, speak clearly, good motor coordination; grip, strength, eye-hand coordination. Physical agility/ability to react to life-threatening emergency or to intervene in a crisis situation.
Mental Requirements: The ability to perform critical thinking and complex problem solving skills; ability to read, write in clear, organized and persuasive manner; analyze, be perceptive/comprehensive, show good judgement, have good math and decision making skills, independent action, planning and prioritizing and follow directions. Work independently as well as cooperatively with others. Be approachable, enthusiastic, personable, work under pressure and meet job-related deadlines accordingly.
Human Relations Skills: The ability to communicate with individuals in a positive manner, both oral and written, demonstrate the ability to be a leader and serve as an appropriate role model to staff members. Receive supervision instruction in a positive manner. Adhere to and administer Agency’s policies, procedures, rules, and regulations. Maintain a professional behavior and appearance at all times.
Equipment Operation: The ability to operate office equipment, such as computer, copier, fax machine, laminator, and calculator.
