About Preauthorization Representative

  Job Description

  A healthcare preauthorization representative is responsible for assisting patients who require treatment that requires insurance carrier pre-authorization. They are responsible for interviewing patients to assess their medication needs and liaising with insurance companies and nurse managers for prior authorization approval. They work in medical clinic billing offices and insurance companies. The responsibilities of a preauthorization representative include:

  Discussing medications, insurance, and prior authorization documents with patients.

  Obtaining prior authorization approval from insurance firms and nurse managers.

  Appealing insurance companies after prior authorization refusals.

  Assessing accounts for completeness and accuracy.

  Following up on missing or incorrect information so patients receive the right reimbursement.

  Documenting account activity using correct medical and billing codes.

  The ideal candidate for this position should have a minimum of 2 years of experience in healthcare preauthorization, preferably with Epic experience. They should have excellent communication skills, be detail-oriented, and have a strong understanding of medical terminology. A high school diploma or equivalent is required, and a bachelors degree in healthcare or a related field is preferred.
