Northern Arizona University in beautiful Flagstaff, Arizona - atop-rated college and mountain town that is the hub of the Grand Canyon,Sedona, and Four Corners region of the American Southwest - isadvertising a two-year Postdoctoral research position in the areas ofcomparative genomics and bioinformatics. The Postdoctoral Scholar willbe based in the Tollis Lab in The School of Informatics, Computing, andCyber Systems, will be supervised by Dr. Marc Tollis, and work incollaboration with Dr. Frank Burbrink (American Museum of NaturalHistory) and Dr. Tiago Simes (Princeton University) on the NSF-fundedproject \"The Genomic Basis of Evolutionary Innovations in the SquamateTree of Life.\"
The Postdoc will be a key member of our team exploring the genomicfoundations of phenotypic innovations throughout the evolutionaryhistory of Squamata (lizards and snakes), resulting in the clearestunderstanding of genomic-phenotypic relationships across broad taxonomicscales in reptiles. The Postdoc will assist phylogenomic analysis,compile whole genome alignments for evolutionary analysis, and work withcollaborators to develop models that co-estimate rates of evolutionusing both phenotypic and genomic data. Also, the Postdoc will developcomputer code, genomic resources, and write manuscripts that focus oncomparative genomics and macroevolutionary analyses.
Research Activities - 60%
Directs, monitors, and participates in research activities includingdata collection, evaluation and analysis for vertebrate comparativegenomics projects.Conducts complex research work and independently reviewsprofessional literature to design and apply appropriate researchmethods and tools.Assists faculty researchers, or may act independently, in theplanning and designing of research projects, establishing prioritiesand recommending schedules, timetables, and costs.Assists faculty researchers, or may act independently, in thepreparation and writing of research proposals for new fundingsources.Co-authors or auth rs research papers and manuscripts forpublication and presents them at conferences and workshops.Creates, operates, maintains and trains others in the operation ofresearch tools for the gathering and processing of research data.Bioinformatics Workflow Development - 25%
Develops code, modules, performs software testing.Documents and archives code using GitHub.Documents and archives data in public repositories including DataDryad, Zenodo, and GenBank.Research Supervisory Activities - 5%
Leads research activities of other research project staff includingundergraduate and graduate students.Administrative Activities - 5%
Performs administrative functions such as prioritization andcoordination of data storage on the Monsoon High PerformanceComputing Cluster.Other - 5%
Other duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications
PhD in evolutionary biology, genomics, bioinformatics or a relatedfield.Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated experience with large-scale genomic data analysis,programming, data visualization, and scientific publication.Demonstrated record of scientific publications.Demonstrated English verbal and written communication skills.Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
