About Postdoctoral Research Scientist Position

  The Department of Epidemiology at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health in New York City invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist with interest in causal inference methods, drug use disorders, and pharmacoepidemiology. The fellow will join a causal inference research team in uniting design and analytic strategies to bridge medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) trial evidence to real-world target populations by: 1) empirically identifying those individuals not represented or under-represented in MOUD trials, and 2) accurately and reliably generalizing expected MOUD effects on treatment retention to the adult Medicaid population, with the broad goal of optimizing the generalizability and policy-relevance of future clinical trials. Depending on their research interests, there are also opportunities to participate in other ongoing research projects; these include 1) identifying heterogeneous treatment effects in MOUD treatment and 2) understanding and quantifying the independent and joint contributions of chronic pain and physical disability to increased risk of opioid misuse.

  The fellow is expected to increase his/her methodological and substantive knowledge of one or more of the aforementioned areas, build skills for developing and implementing research studies, and have opportunities to lead and/or co-author manuscript publications. They will perform population health research activities, including processing CMS datasets, performing statistical analyses, developing or extending estimation methods, preparing manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals, delivering presentations at scientific meetings, and providing other research and methodological support for existing and ongoing studies.

  The position offers up to two years of postdoctoral fellowship with compensation commensurate with experience, excellent benefits package and funds for travel to professional conferences and meetings. Individuals with the following characteristics will be competitive for the position: strong motivation and commitment to a career in epidemiologic methods, excellent communication and quantitative skills, ability to conduct self-directed and collaborative research.

  * PhD, ScD, or equivalent degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics or related analytical disciplines;

  * Comprehensive understanding of statistical concepts and methods;

  * Proficiency in R;

  * Excellent communication skills (both oral and writing) and analytical skills.
