  Department Summary

  The University of Denver (DU) is a top ranked university in a thrivingcity at the base of the Rocky Mountains. The Graduate School of ProfessionalPsychology (GSPP) at DU was created in 1976 to house one of the first PsyDprograms in the country, under the then-new Vail training model(practitioner-scholar). The PsyD program is the nation's second-oldestand has been continuously accredited by the American Psychological Associationsince 1979. GSPP provides four specialized master's programs: sportcoaching, sport and performance psychology, forensic psychology, andinternational disaster psychology. The School also has a partiallyaffiliated, APA-accredited internship consortium and in-house serviceclinics. All programs provide comprehensive training for applied work withinan academic environment of cooperation and collaboration that fosters criticalthinking and self-determined functioning; we are committed to providingcultural competence for all our students. We use our knowledge of multiculturalism and individual differences to make our programas welcoming and inclusive as we can to all students, staff, and faculty.

  As a professional college, GSPP is focused on high level integration ofapplied practice, theory, research, and scholarship. Denver FIRSTadheres to the practitioner-scholar philosophy and emphasizes real-worldlearning and applied research endeavors.   Founded in 2014 to serve as a regional hub for forensic mental healtheducation, practice, and consultation, Denver Forensic Institute ofResearch, Service and Training (Denver FIRST) fosters community anduniversity partnerships through a host of service learning opportunities forgraduate students working with underserved forensic populations in the localcommunity. Denver FIRST is integrated with the Masters in Forensic Psychology(MAFP) Program and the Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program at GSPP,supported by core GSPP faculty under the leadership of Director NeilGowensmith, PhD, and staffed by GSPP students. Primarily, Denver FIRSTserves as a go-to setting for forensic evaluation, outpatient competencyrestoration, research, grants, and consultation in forensic mentalhealth in the Denver metro area and beyond.

The ethnic and cultural diversity of the DenverMetro area includes a Latino/Hispanic population that represents about athird of the population, a strong and visible African American community,a diverse array of Southeast Asian refugees and immigrants, and a similarlydiverse population of refugees and immigrants from East Africa.   Position Summary

  We are pleased to announce Denver FIRST's ninth annual postdoctoralfellowship position at the University of Denver. The fellowship providesopportunities for forensic practice, supervision, research, andteaching. Primarily, the fellowship offers a blend of forensic evaluationpractice and academic duties.

  The 12-month (4-quarter), full-time postdoctoral fellowship positionswill be conducted under the auspices of Denver FIRST. Each fellow willcomplete a minimum of 2000 hours of training over the course of the year,with at least 500 hours (25%) of that time spent in the direct provisionof professional forensic psychological services such as assessment (e.g.,competency to proceed, legal sanity, violence risk, and other types ofpsycho-legal evaluations), treatment, and consultation. Training will besupervised by a license psychologist, with a minimum of 2 hours ofonsite, in-person supervision per week. All reports submitted to the courtwill be cosigned by the primary supervisor. The fellows will be formallyevaluated on a semi-annual basis pursuant to a written evaluation process thatoutlines progress over the course of the year, including identification ofstrengths and limitations of each fellow's skills as an early careerforensic pctitioner/scholar model, and the fellow will be presented with numerousopportunities for both didactic and applied training, clinical work,teaching, and research.

  The fellows are considered trainees and may not be paid on a fee-for-servicebasis. There are two positions available. The fellowship is a 12- month,full-time position with an expected average work week of 40-45 hours. Becausethe fellowship program is demanding, outside employment is stronglydiscouraged. Postdoctoral fellows will be paid an estimated stipend of$56,484.00 for the 2024-2025 training year (salary will follow the NIHpostdoctoral fellow salary requirement). Additional compensation andbenefits in the form of health insurance, paid vacation and sick leave,and liability coverage for program-related on- and off-site activities will beprovided. Given the requirement that the fellows attend the annual AP-LSConference, leave will be provided accordingly. Limited funding may beavailable for professional development activities, and authorized leave timefor these activities may be possible (but is not guaranteed).

  The fellows will have an office and access to various resources from DU. Eachfellow will have a computer with word processing software, access toprinters, e-mail, and law and psychology databases through the universitylibrary.

  Certification. Upon completion of the postdoctoral training, the fellowswill receive documentation clearly delineating the year the fellowparticipated in the training program.
