Our laboratory develops technologies to reverse the circuit impairments that cause mental illness, including depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, PTSD, and addictions. More information is available at https://www.tnelab.org. The project will develop and test real-time closed-loop/responsive electrical brain stimulation to alter network function and behavior. The specific emphasis is on testing stimulation locked to the phase of ongoing brain oscillations, as a means to alter those oscillations and their cross-regional connectivity. You will be characterizing and testing these methods in pre-clinical (rat) assays, and supporting an engineering team that is embodying them into a human-ready clinical device. This is a position focused on methods development and characterization in animals, but we are also performing pilot human experiments and you would be able to be part of that work if desired. This particular project has strong translational and commercial potential. If you are interested in entrepreneurial opportunities or work in industry, it is an extremely good fit. It is also a good fit for someone with an engineering background looking to move into neural engineering or neuroscience, as much of the work is focused around technology development and characterization. Job Responsibilities/Duties: *(20%) Design and execute pre-clinical experiments in activity-dependent brain stimulation. *(20%) Liaison with electronics and device engineering teams to develop requirements for the above pre-clinical experiments, communicate results, and participate in overall system design. *(10%) Maintain experimental records with strong attention to detail and completeness. *(10%) Analyze and summarize experimental results, in formats suitable for internal review and scientific dissemination in peer-reviewed forums. This will include both written and graphical communication. *(10%) Assist with development of future research agendas and funding proposals, including substantial independent technical writing. *(10%) Maintain compliance with all applicable governmental and institutional regulations, including drafting of formal protocols for approval and maintenance of relevant records. *(20%) Hire, train, and supervise bachelors-level research technicians to assist with all of the above. Qualifications Required Qualifications: *A doctoral degree in a relevant field, such as neuroscience, engineering, psychology, physics, computer science, and many other disciplines are present in our lab. *Strong programming skills. MATLAB or Python is essential. C/C++ (and derivatives), LabVIEW, and scripting languages could be useful but are not required. Prior experience with data acquisition hardware, prototyping systems (Arduino, Teensy, Pi, etc.) and/or creating real-time systems would be helpful but is also not required. *Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Much of our work requires explaining complex technical concepts to non-domain-experts. *Evidence of substantial capability for independent work, problem-solving, and initiative-taking. *Interpersonal skills appropriate for collaboration in a very multidisciplinary and highly diverse environment. Preferred Qualifications: *Prior experimental work in animal or human neuroscience *Prior work with psychiatric patient populations or the biological mechanisms of mental illness *Skills with electronics or computer hardware, whether design or repair *Experience with brain-computer interfaces and/or brain decoding paradigms *Entrepreneurial interests and skills, as evidenced by spec fic participation in business plan competitions or similar pitch-based work.
