Overview

　　The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security.

　　Responsibilities

　　The Atmospheric, Climate, and Earth Systems Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a postdoctoral research associate to work on modeling and analysis of convection and its future changes, with a stronger emphasis on organized convection over the tropics. The successful candidate will work with a project team to develop/use modeling and analysis tools such as regional and global convection permitting models, large eddy simulations, feature tracking, hierarchical modeling, and machine learning to understand how large-scale and mesoscale environments control organized convection and how it is influenced by global warming. The candidate will also have opportunities to explore other research areas such as connecting organized convection with tropical modes of variability, extreme events, and climate predictability.

　　Responsibilities:

　　Develop/use modeling and analysis tools such as regional and global convection permitting models, large eddy simulations, feature tracking, hierarchical modeling, and machine learning to understand how large-scale and mesoscale environments control organized convection and how it is influenced by global warming.

　　Publish results in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

　　Qualifications

　　Minimum Qualifications:

　　Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.Preferred Qualifications:

　　A Ph.D. degree in Earth Sciences, Climate Science, Atmospheric Sciences, Meteorology, Physics, Statistics, or a related field.

　　Strong hands-on experience in one or more areas including numerical modeling, analysis of large datasets, and applying machine learning and deep learning techniques to atmosphere/climate problems.

　　Demonstrated skill in working with large and heterogeneous datasets.

　　Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Fortran, or C/C++ for high-performance computing.

　　Familiarity with code-sharing environments such as GitHub.

　　A strong record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.

　　Strong communication skills, ability to work well both independently and in a team setting.

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

　　Please be aware that the Department of Energy (DOE) prohibits DOE employees and contractors from having any affiliation with the foreign government of a country DOE has identified as a “country of risk” without explicit approval by DOE and Battelle.
