About Post Doctorate RA - Advanced Transmission Electron Microscopy

  Overview

The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security.

  Responsibilities

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and The Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), a national scientific user facility supported by the U.S. DOE Office of Biological and Environmental Research, has an open position for an outstanding postdoctoral researcher who will conduct ex-situ and in-situ scanning/transmission electron microscopy (S/TEM) studies of energy storage materials and solid-gas interactions, typically such as rechargeable batteries and alloy oxidation. The focus will be on using/developing in-situ and ex-situ S/TEM, electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) to probe into the structural and chemical evolution of rechargeable battery materials under dynamic operation conditions of the battery in a S/TEM column as well as metal oxidation using environmental TEM.

The candidate should have in-depth knowledge and practical experience in operation of state-of-the-art aberration corrected S/TEM, which includes imaging and spectroscopy of TEM, STEM, EELS, and EDS, S/TEM image simulation and 3D imaging and 4D-STEM. Practical hands-on experience in the operation of probe corrected and monochromated TEM/STEM, image-corrected TEM, nanomanipulation within S/TEM, and SEM/FIB for preparation and lift-out of specimens is needed to successfully perform the experiments. Knowledge of electrochemistry, battery devices fabrication and testing as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, will be advantages. Additional experience on structural and chemical characterization using atom probe tomography, XRD, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry along with physical property measurements, in particular, electrochemical properties is desirable. The candidate is also expected to help others in the TEM lab to operate the microscopes. The position is for 1 year and may be extended for a total of up to 3 years.

  Qualifications

  Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.Preferred Qualifications:

Expertise with aberration corrected TEM and STEM with state-of-the-art detectors for versatile imaging modes, such as in-situ TEM, environmental TEM (ETEM), STEM, and associated techniques, including tomography, 4D-STEM, nano beam diffraction (NBD) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), to probe composition, structure, and evolution of materials under dynamic conditions.

Expertise using focused ion beam (FIB) to prepare TEM samples.

Record of excellence in research in electron microscopy supported by publications in peer-reviewed literature.

The ability to adapt, refine, or innovate experimental tools based on research needs.

Proven ability to plan and execute research and take initiative in the completion of tasks important to the projects. These include preparation of first drafts of papers for peer-reviewed journals, technical presentations at scientific conferences.

Ability to work in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary group of scientists and technical staff, ability to communicate effectively with experimentalist and computational modeling colleagues.

Strong verbal and written communications skills.

  Understanding of electron optics, electrochemistry
