Definition
Under general supervision, is responsible for receiving, storing and releasing all property taken into custody by the Police Division; performs related duties as required.
Examples of Work

Receives and processes property and items of evidence taken into custody by police personnel;
Responds to property status inquiries from the general public and law enforcement personnel; explains the procedures and protocol for the release of property;
Reviews Evidence & Property Inventory sheet and other forms to ensure accuracy and completion; enters inventory data into computer system;
Records computer generated property number on incoming property and all applicable forms for identification and location purposes;
Packages and stores incoming property in storeroom according to established guidelines;
Handles biohazard materials and property according to legal and health guidelines;
Maintains and secures biological evidence in frozen storage equipment under strict temperature control;
Locates and releases property to authorized law enforcement personnel and/or owner; complies appropriately with court orders regarding the release of property;
Operates forklifts, dollies, and other moving equipment to convey property;
Maintains written records of property location, custody and final disposition;
Uses a computer to enter, update, look-up, and verify information pertaining to property and evidence status;
Locates and removes from storage property identified for final disposition;
Assists in the sorting and categorizing of property pulled for final disposition;
Disposes of impounded property in accordance with proper procedures; transports property to facilities for disposal or destruction;
Transports property to satellite labs and offices.;
Assists in preparing and processing items for auction of unclaimed property.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of the twelfth school gradeANDone (1) year of experience in warehousing or storekeeping. Substitution(s): A certificate of high school equivalence (GED) will be accepted in lieu of a high school diploma.
Possession of a valid driver’s license.
Possession of LEADS “practitioner” status by the end of the probationary period.
Possession of a valid forklift operator certification by the end of the probationary period.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
General knowledge of filing systems; general knowledge of basic arithmetic mathematics; general knowledge of the proper use of basic personal protective equipment; ability to read and comprehend written documents; ability to check names, numbers and listings quickly and accurately; ability to make arithmetic computations; ability to record numbers accurately; ability to operate a computer and utilize applicable software programs; ability to read and follow established procedures; ability to transport and shelve fifty (50) pounds; ability to climb step-ladders and walk considerable distances on flat surfaces; ability to accurately handle cash; ability to work with potentially offensive biohazard materials using appropriate protective equipment; ability to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with the general public and law enforcement personnel; ability to effectively communicate with others in potentially confrontational situations.

The names of the applicants passing this administration of this exam will be used to create aNEW, OPEN COMPETITIVE, eligible list, and willreplacethe names on the current list. If you are interested in having your name included on the new eligible list, you will need to apply for this exam within the filing period and successfully complete all phases of the testing process. The examination process will consist of a multiple-choice exam weighted 75% covering Oral Comprehension, Reading Comprehension, Information Ordering, and Materials Storage & Distribution; and a computer skills exam weighted 25% covering Name/Number Comparison, Numeric Filing, and Outlook.
The exam is expected to be administered in March. Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time.
All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test. For any position within the Division of Police, the hiring process will also include the completion of an extensive personal history questionnaire and a polygraph examination.
