About Police Officer (Special Operations Division)

  Summary The United States Capitol Police (USCP) safeguards the Congress, Members of Congress, employees, visitors, and Congressional buildings and grounds from crime, disruption, and terrorism. We protect and secure Congress so it can fulfill its constitutional and legislative responsibilities in a safe, secure and open environment. Responsibilities The applicants selected for this position serve as a Special Operations Division (SOD) Police Officer under the direction of the Operational Services Bureau (OSB), providing police and security services for the United States Capitol grounds and other areas as directed. The Special Operations Division (SOD) is divided into sections that are responsible for providing police services during specified tours of duty on a 24-hour basis, and security services designed to protect the Congress, its employees and visitors, and property under the jurisdiction of the Congress, from all threats posed by criminal activity or civil disorder. Note: Multiple vacancies exist. The number of SOD positions will be determined by the needs of the Department. Conduct directed patrol checks or physical inspections of designated U.S. congressional members’ residences (home and grounds). Provide motorcade escorts for congressional delegations traveling throughout the District of Columbia, Virginia, and Maryland and other designated areas in the U.S. as assigned. Patrol the U.S. Capitol Police jurisdiction using motorcycles and/or automobiles responding to calls, violations, and duress alarms involving crimes in progress or just discovered; enforcing traffic regulations; assisting at accident scenes; and maintaining a law enforcement presence. Set up and staff barricades. Secure the perimeter around Capitol buildings. Participate in rapid response operations in response to civil disturbances or emergency situations. Requirements Conditions of Employment Must be a current USCP Officer below the rank of Sergeant and attained the rank of Private with Training. Must have successfully completed your probationary period by the closing date of this announcement. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must successfully complete all required training. Qualifications 1. Must be a USCP Officer below the rank of Sergeant; have successfully completed your probationary period; and attained the rank of Private with Training by the closing date of this announcement. 2. Must not be in restricted leave status as of the date of selection. 3. Must be in a full and unrestricted duty status to attend, participate, and successfully complete all required training courses related to this position as of the date of selection. 4. Must be available to work flexible hours, rotating shifts and possible midnight assignments. 5. Must successfully complete all required training to be a qualified prisoner processor. 6. Must successfully complete and maintain certifications for any long gun training. (M4 rifle and/or Benelli shotgun qualification) Education There is no education substitution for experience in this series and/or grade. Additional Information Applications and supporting documentation must be received by the closing date of the announcement to receive consideration. This position is non-exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act overtime provisions. This position is included in a collective bargaining unit. NOTE: More than one selection may be made from this vacancy announcement. The selection list will be active for a period of one (1) year from the date of approval of the selection memorandum. An applicant may request to be removed from consideration by sending a written request to the Office of Human Resources. RETENTION CRITERIA 1. Successfully complete all required training to include; the SOD Field Training Officer (FTO) Program, M4 rifle and/or Benelli shotgun qualification (and maintain proficiency), and the Standard Field Sobriety Test (SFST) School. 2. Satisfactorily complete a one-year probationary period beginning on the date of completion of the SOD FTO Program.
