  Scope of Job

  To lead and provide immediate radio communications with law enforcement personnel. Responsible for assisting with the daily functions of the University Police Department Communications Center.

  Description of Duties

  Leads and provides guidance and support to the Police Communication Operators team.

  Participates in the operations of the communications center.

  Assists with organizing work schedules for police communications operations to cover shifts 24/7 and approves their time.

  Monitors the accuracy of all records in the Communications Center.

  Receives and transmits law enforcement and security personnel emergency and non-emergency information through a public safety radio communications system to promote proper and effective police and/or security response.

  Responsible for entering all pertinent data concerning calls for service, officer assignment, and patrol activity into a Computer Aided Dispatch ( CAD ) system and/or the national, state, and local criminal databases.

  Coordinates appropriate resources to support police personnel engaged in emergency situations.

  Complies with mandates use, operation, and management of the Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunications System ( TLETS ).

  Conducts on-the-job training for police communications operators; evaluates and corrects performance of assigned staff.

  Performs the duties of the police communications operator when necessary.

  Must be available for consultation or troubleshooting problems in the Communications Center at all hours.

  Serves as Field Training Officer for new hires to the department.

  Schedules training for Police Communications Operators and ensures licenses are current and maintained.

  Performs other duties as assigned.

  Direct supervision of all assigned staff.

  High school diploma or equivalent.

  None.

  Required Experience

  One (1) year of experience as a police communications operator or equivalent experience.

  Preferred Experience

  Supervisory experience.

  Equipment

  Use of standard office equipment. Police communications equipment, police radio net, computer aided dispatch ( CAD ), “911” Emergency telephone system, security, and fire computer system ( STAEFA ), and other associated computer equipment.

  Working Conditions

  Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office environment; Must be able to work on any assigned shift, with varying days off and on holidays. Subject to emergency recall during man-made or natural disasters and unusual occurrences on campus. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

  Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and relay details accurately. Maintains confidentiality of work-related information and materials. Ability to work effectively under stressful conditions and emergency situations.
