Summary The position is located at the USDA/APHIS/Wildlife Services (WS) National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC) within the Laboratory Support Services Unit (LSSU). The mission of the NWRC is to provide methods and scientific information to resolve conflicts between wildlife and society, and the LSSU is responsible for a variety of laboratory duties which require Quality Control and Quality Management functions. Responsibilities The duties may include, but are not limited to: Performs calculations to determine the theoretical concentration of analytes in quality control samples and percent recovery of target analytes from a given matrix to theoretical values Maintains chain-of-custody for quality control samples and submitted samples in compliance with EPA Good Laboratory Standards regulations, where required. Ensures that reference standards used for GLP work have been certified either in-house or newly purchased with a current Certificate of Analysis. Maintains an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook containing sample fortification procedures, calculations, and a historical record of quality control sample results. Assists in performing quality control/management of procedures performed as required or recommended by ISO 17025 standards. Schedules, coordinates, and documents maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment in compliance with GLP and ISO 17025 standards. Maintains a current laboratory quality control management plan that describes the structure of the LSSU, staff, instrumentation, analytical methods, and workflows within the LSSU. Assists in maintaining a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for the Wildlife Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (WDDL), which is part of LSSU. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. FOR THE GS-09 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-08 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates: Experience in the development, modification, validation, verification, and review of methods and assays/data including development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for a laboratory operating under ISO 17025-accredition and/or in accordance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP). Experience with implementing/overseeing regulatory statutes associated with ISO 17025 and/or GLP. Experience participating in audits required for laboratories operating in accordance with ISO 17025 and GLP standards. Experience establishing and maintaining quality control parameters and limits pertaining to chemical and microbiological data and analyses. Experience with computer-based laboratory information management systems for quality management. OR Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree with a combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics, except financial and commercial mathematics. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.
