  Summary:

  The ARC (Animal Recovery Center) and CARE (Canine Annex for Recovery and Enrichment) facilities are dedicated to the recovery and rehabilitation of victims of cruelty and neglect admitted through NYPD and the ASPCA's Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) and Community Engagement (CE) programs.

  Our dedicated team of more than forty-five sheltering, medical, and animal behavior professionals work closely with the ASPCA Animal Hospital, Forensics, Legal Advocacy and Investigations, Behavioral Sciences, Shelter Medicine Services, Community Engagement, Placement, and the Adoption Center teams to ensure coordinated response and operations, and holistic, balanced, high-quality care for the animals we serve.

  The Per Diem ARC Veterinarian will perform all the duties of a NYC licensed veterinarian, including providing compassionate, high-quality, practical veterinary care to a wide range of cruelty, neglect, and at-risk animals.

  Schedule:

  Regular part-time schedules or relief/fill-in available 7 days per week; come this fall we are looking for full time per diem (40 hours weekly).

  Responsibilities:

  Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  Managing Medical Cases (80%):

  Perform high quality individualized care, considering the medical and behavioral needs of our patients while maintaining overall population medicine using shelter best practices.Perform low stress handling for medical intakes and direct high-quality care for all new NYPD and CE cases admitted to AAH/ARC/CARE and in collaboration with partner departments for animals admitted to veterinary partner hospitals, and the Adoption Center.Ensure appropriate medical care and behavioral support of all Foster Program animals and animals in transition to the Adoption Center.Develop skilled and efficient diagnosis and treatment plans following ARC/CARE/AAH medical parameters and guidelines.Perform exams, diagnostic tests, and medical treatments with full utilization of Fear Free medical handling. Ensure LVTs and ICAs are practicing Fear Free handing.Provide medical care for outpatients of owned, fostered out and/or animals in transition to the Adoption Center.Maintain thorough, high quality medical records, documenting all exam findings, test results, and treatments.Create and maintain accurate weekly treatment sheets.Work with partner hospitals as needed, including referral for advanced care, and assessing medical stability of new cases at partner hospitalsMaintain ARC census daily and Impromed scheduled treatments.Assess medical prognosis and make appropriate euthanasia decisions following ARC/CARE/AAH protocols and guidelines outlined by the ARC Medical Supervisor.Perform euthanasia for poor medical or behavioral prognosis following ARC/CARE/AAH protocols and guidelines outlined by the ARC Medical Supervisor.Provide Medical Coverage to CARE and ASPCA Animal HospitalProvide a safe and compassionate environment for animals in our care, our staff, and for our clients by using low-stress handling techniques

  Provide Medical Coverage to AAH

  Provide high-quality, practical veterinary care to a wide range of outpatients and inpatients; skilled and efficient diagnosis and treatment of outpatients and hospitalized animals within hospital medical parameters and budgetary guidelinesPerform general procedures, routine and emergency surgery and high-volume dentistryProvide a high level of customer service to external and internal clientsPractice in compliance with Fear Free guidelinesWhile seeing appointments: Fulfill 30-minute appointment turnaround time

  Interdepartmental Communication/Administrative/Other (20%)

  Collaborate and support the work of partner departments, particularly the Humane Law Enforcement, Legal Advocacy and Investigations, Community Engagement, and the Adoption Center departments.Attend daily rounds and daily change of shift rounds meetings.Provide a high level of customer service to external and internal clients.Follow written and verbally communicated ASPCA and ARC Standard Operating Procedures.Cover the ARC Medical Supervisor in her/his absence.

  Education and Work Experience:

  DVM degree (or equivalent) with NY State veterinary license.Fear Free certification preferred.

  Compensation and benefits:

  The target hiring salary for this perdiem role is $110/hourly (weekday) and $125/hourly (weekend).

  Ability to successfully work in a high-volume, fast-paced environment that combines emergency and shelter medicine and effectively multi-task with a high degree of integrity and accountability and without loss of attention to detail, Ability to work well within a team and communicate effectively and courteously with all levels of staff, Maintain open mind regarding changes and be willing to learn, implement, and teach new protocols, Maintain strict confidentiality when dealing with criminal cases., Provide medical support for larger scale NYPD and CE cases.
