Summary Park Ranger located in Acadia National Park, in the Visitor & Resources Protection Division. Responsibilities Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work year-round. Anticipated Entry on Duty is March, and the season will conclude in October. You will be in non-pay from Pay Period 23 (10/20/24) until Pay Period 07 (03/23/25) for the remainder of the year, dependent on park work needs, budget and/or weather. Though non-pay time may be reduced to a minimum of 1 pay period in accordance with NPS policy. Major Duties Responsible for supervision, evaluation, and daily management of up to two seasonal GS - 5 General Park Rangers, volunteers, and community service organizations. Serves as the subject matter expert on IAH for all Search and Rescue, and EMS calls within the park. Provides medical care to patients and updates supervisor on needs for the program. Cleans and does light maintenance in the Duck Harbor Campground to include the three composting toilets and five lean-to shelters. Provides information to campers and day-use visitors on safety related to the island, campground and trails. Conducts routine water sampling for two public water supply wells within the park. Area Information Isle au Haut is an island located 7 miles off the Maine coast near the town of Stonington. Approximately ½ the island is owned by the NPS and the rest is owned by a robust full-time and summer community. There are 18 miles of trails, a ranger station, a fire cache and an five-site campground. In the summer, a ferry boat services the island, making stops at the town landing and a stop at the Park Service dock. They deliver mail, packages, UPS, and groceries. In the off season, there is limited ferry service. The island does have a road system and automobiles are allowed on the island's limited road system. 40 to 50 residents live on the island year around and another 150 to 200 are summer residents. The driving economic engine is the tourist industry and lobster fishing. There is a small seasonal grocery store/gas station/ post office, a few seasonal restaurants, several churches and a small K-8 school. Government housing may be available for these positions. There are very few seasonal rentals on the island. Some alternatives would be living in Stonington and commuting on the ferry boat, or a rented room with a local resident. To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, supervising volunteers, interns, and youth work groups and assisting with oversight of seasonal staff, implementing a visitor services program, providing visitor services and develops guidelines and operating methods that reflect a thorough understanding of agency policies and objectives, developing and conducting interpretive presentations, and training staff and volunteers; presenting to a wide variety of audiences using a variety of fully developed interpretive skills, techniques, and tools delivered in person and through interpretive media and technology. Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park related work, which include, but are not limited to, tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 2 full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education or I have a master's or equivalent graduate degree related to the occupation (Major Study - natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. The incumbent is routinely required to perform physically rigorous assignments relating to trail maintenance, chain sawing, and campground maintenance. Working Conditions: Much of the work is performed in an outdoors setting. During outdoor operations the incumbent is exposed to extreme weather conditions, to hazardous conditions such as those encountered in search and rescue operations, on-site safety inspections in hazardous areas, and to law enforcement situations. Potential exists for exposure to ticks, potentially carrying a multitude of tick-borne diseases, and to poison ivy.
