About Open Rank Tenure-Track: Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor

  The Department of Environmental Health Sciences of Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health seeks applicants for a hire of 2-4 tenure-track faculty positions at the level of Assistant Professor or higher. Since 2017, the Department has doubled in faculty size and more than tripled its external grant funded. In 2022, the Department's growing research portfolio has brought Columbia University to the #1 position in NIH funding from the NIH's National Institute of Environmental Health Science (NIEHS), based on NIH Reporter public data. Over the same time span, the Department has also increased its educational offering, including growing the highly successful Skills for Health and Research Professional (SHARP) intensive training program, new class offerings and new Master-level tracks. We seek scholars with experience in environmental health sciences and/or skills applicable to environmental health sciences that are interested in contributing to the thriving Department's research, education, and practice.   The successful candidate(s) will develop an independent research program within the Department of Environmental Health Sciences. Among other opportunities for collaboration, the Department is home to the Columbia Center for Children's Environmental Health, the NIEHS-Columbia P30 Center for Environmental Health and Justice in Northern Manhattan that supports an active community engagement program in Northern Manhattan (Harlem, Washington Heights, and Inwood) and the South Bronx, the Columbia University Northern Plains Superfund Research Program and the Program for Climate and Health. These Centers and Programs offer opportunities for community-based participatory research in communities that are disproportionally affected by adverse environmental exposures. The incumbent will work and collaborate with investigators across Columbia University to develop a comprehensive research program in the areas referenced above, and they will play a substantial role in our MS, MPH, and PhD educational programs as an instructor and mentor.

  Research, Education, and Leadership Opportunities at the Different Faculty Ranks:

  Assistant Professor

  The successful candidates appointed at the Assistant Professor rank will have the exciting opportunity to establish a new independent research program within the rapidly expanding Department of Environmental Health Sciences. This role will include working with a highly qualified cadre of graduate students, thereby contributing to the department's educational objectives. Developing new leadership skills in leading a research team is a key part of this position. The successful candidate will also benefit from receiving highly qualified mentorship from peers, senior faculty, and professional external coaches. Participation in departmental and interdisciplinary projects, as well as in our MS, MPH, and PhD programs as an instructor and mentor, is expected.

  Associate Professor

  The successful candidates appointed at the Associate Professor rank will have the chance to lead in both research and educational endeavors within the department. This role entails having an established research portfolio and the capability to secure substantial external funding. They will play an integral role in shaping the department's research direction and will have opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration across Columbia University. Educational responsibilities will extend beyond instruction to include curriculum development and potentially spearheading specialized tracks within the department's master's and doctoral programs. Leadership roles will be available in departmental administration, high-level committees, and strategic planning initiatives.

  Professor

  The successful candidates appointed at the Professor rank will be recognized as a leading expert in the field of environmental health sciences. They will have the opportunity to set the research agenda at the departmental and institutional levels, including leading major research initiatives and community-based participatory research projects. As a senior mentor to junior faculty, they will play an instrumental role in guiding career development. Educational commitments will not only encompass instruction and mentorship but also the initiation and direction of academic programs. The successful candidate will also serve in critical leadership roles at the university level, participating in advisory boards, interdisciplinary centers, and strategic committees.

  Minimum Qualifications:

  Doctorate degree in environmental health sciences, epidemiology, toxicology, sociology, or other related discipline (PhD, ScD, DrPH, or MD), with substantial post-doctoral training and experience.

  A strong record of engaging in research, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, a record of original and creative long-term research vision, and demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring are required. Potential for or an established record of obtaining peer-reviewed funding for independent research is essential, as is a demonstrated success in working with multidisciplinary and multi-institutional teams.

  Excellent communication skills and collaborative skills are also required.

  The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
