  Description of Work Unit

  CEMML is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at CSU . CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on the Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and other CSU departments to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

  Position Summary

  Interested in learning more about conserving the incredible natural and cultural resources found on our nation’s military lands?

  Looking to gain hands-on experience in fish and wildlife ecology, vegetation and habitat monitoring and management, restoration, archaeology, public history, archival research, environmental compliance, carbon accounting, natural and cultural resources planning, or Geographic Information Systems ( GIS )?

  Want to earn college credits (and dollars!) while living in unique areas close to military bases?

  Paid, temporary seasonal natural and cultural resource management, environmental compliance, and GIS positions (Temporary Technical Support I) are available with Colorado State University’s ( CSU ) Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands ( CEMML ) at military installations throughout the United States and at CSUs main campus. These positions include internships, mentorships, and early career opportunities through CEMML’s Early-career Development Program ( ECDP ). Military affiliation is not required to apply for these positions.

  If you are a student, recent graduate, or early-career professional who is interested in learning more about federal land management, these positions are the perfect opportunity to build connections and gain hands-on experience that will help you excel in the field of natural or cultural resources management, environmental compliance, and GIS . Working under the guidance of seasoned Resource Managers and Specialists, you will get firsthand experience in many of the practical applications of environmental management.

  The positions, duration, and the associated projects vary by location. Each position is intended to provide a set of unique projects and tasks that will help students and recent graduates gain a better understanding of the roles of environmental staff and the methods they use to directly support their environments. Through these different positions, successful technicians will have the opportunity to expand their skills in the following disciplines, including but not limited to:

  Natural Resources Management

  Flora and fauna inventory

  Invasive species monitoring and management

  Threatened and endangered species monitoring

  Habitat restoration

  Erosion mitigation

  Forest inventory timber cruise

  Prescribed fire and wildland firefighting

  Outdoor recreation

  Community outreach, volunteer coordination, and public education

  Field-data collection, entry, and management using GPS , ArcGIS, and Excel

  Cultural Resources Management

  Historical and archival research

  National Historic Preservation Act ( NHPA ) compliance

  Archaeological inventory and assessment

  Historic property evaluation and monitoring

  Cultural resource identification

  GPS data collection and GIS mapping

  Osteological identification and analysis

  State Historic Preservation Office ( SHPO ) correspondence and documentation

  Writing and editing technical reports

  Cultural resource management planning

  Environmental Compliance and Resource Planning

  Compliance document preparation in support of regulations such as the National Environmental Policy Act ( NEPA ), Endangered Species Act ( ESA ), Clean Water Act ( CWA ), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act ( RCRA ), Sikes Act, and more.

  Resource condition assessments and project/action impact analysis

  Perform wetland delineations.

  Review and contribute to compliance renewal applications and permit packages.

  Conduct site inspections and monitor systems for compliance.

  Update and maintain management plans such as Integrated Natural or Cultural Resource Management Plans, Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans, Storm Water Management Plans, and Hazardous Waste Management Plans.

  Develop Best Management Practices and Standard Operating Procedures.

  Performing carbon assessments and determining carbon sequestration potential of natural ecosystems.

  Geographic Information Systems ( GIS )

  Cartography

  Spatial data collection, including post-processing, development, and standardization

  Spatial analysis and spatial modeling

  Script and tool development using python, SQL , ETL , or ArcGIS Model Builder

  Survey123, ArcGIS Field Maps, Avenza Maps, or other data form development

  Required Job Qualifications

  Must have an interest in pursuing a career in federal lands management.

  Must be physically capable of working independently in outdoor locations under varying weather conditions.

  Pursuing a B.S. in natural resources-, cultural resources-, ecosystem science-, or environmental policy-related field (at least a sophomore standing).

  Experience using Microsoft Office Suite and/or Adobe Creative Suite software.

  Must be able to pass a federal background investigation to obtain a Department of Defense Installation Access Pass.

  Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.

  The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

  Preferred Job Qualifications

  Natural Resources Management

  Currently enrolled or holder of a Graduate Degree in natural resources-, biology-, or environmental science-related fields.

  Experience collecting field data and entering data in paper or digital forms.

  Experience using GPS equipment to collect field data.

  Experience flora and/or fauna monitoring or management (specify taxa/ecosystem/regions of prior experience).

  Experience performing habitat restoration or invasive species management.

  Experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment in wildland fire and forestry practices and/or ability to meet requirements for the NWCG standards for Fire Fighter Type 2, which includes an annual pack test at arduous level and fire line refresher (maintained annually).

  Experience with manual labor using powered tools and heavy equipment such as chainsaws, weed-eaters, mowers, tractors, ATVs/UTVs etc.

  Training and experience using GIS software.

  Cultural Resources Management

  Currently enrolled or holder of a Graduate Degree in archaeology-, history-, anthropology-, historic preservation-, or cultural resources-related field.

  Experience conducting research and compiling background information.

  Experience organizing and planning historical/archival/archaeological research projects

  Experience inventorying and assessing cultural properties in accordance with Section 106 of the NHPA .

  Prior experience photographing archaeological sites/properties or historic buildings and structures.

  Experience using GPS equipment to collect field data and/or familiarity with GIS .

  Environmental Compliance and Resource Planning

  Currently enrolled or holder of a Graduate Degree in natural resources-, environmental policy-, environmental compliance-, chemistry-toxicology-, or ecosystem science-related fields.

  Familiar with basic principles related to regulations such as NEPA , ESA , CWA , and/or RCRA .

  Knowledge of resource types often considered in environmental impact analysis (e.g., air quality; water, geological, cultural, and biological resources; land use; noise, infrastructure; public health and safety; hazardous materials and wastes; socioeconomics; and environmental justice).

  Experience interpreting and concisely summarizing complex information into reports or compliance documents such as environmental assessments, biological assessments, management plans, best management practices, or similar multidisciplinary compliance documents.

  Experience performing environmental audits and inspections and writing technical inspection reports.

  Experience developing and presenting educational materials and presentations in support of environmental public outreach programs.

  Experience reviewing permits for compliance and determining appropriate enforcement actions, and/or preparing permit renewal packages.

  Geographic Information Systems ( GIS )

  Currently enrolled or holder of a Graduate Degree in natural resources management, environmental science, geography, geographic information systems ( GIS ), history, anthropology, or computer science, or a related field.

  Demonstrated training and experience using GIS software, database management software, global positioning system technology, and geospatial technical writing and documentation.

  Managing spatial data in geodatabases or Microsoft Access databases.

  Knowledge and experience developing web applications including geo-portal data maintenance, ArcGIS Online or story maps.

  Knowledge and experience with automation processes such as ETL tools, python scripting, R, and/or SQL .
