Position Summary
The MSU Office of Environmental Health and Safety is seeking an Occupational Safety Compliance Officer to lead the Occupational Safety Team. This senior level position will be responsible for overseeing workplace health and safety for over 23,000 university employees and the work practices of contractors on campus. This position will work to expand the University’s Contractor Safety program into off-campus locations. The position will manage existing campus safety programs and develop new programs as needed based on changes in work practices or regulations. This position will work to investigate safety and health concerns and maintain records necessary to demonstrate compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local Health, Safety, and Environmental regulations.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which would normally be acquired by completing a Bachelor's Degree in engineering, industrial hygiene, occupational safety, physics, chemistry or a closely related field such as Environmental Health and Safety, engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or a science-related discipline; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in industrial/occupational safety and developing and delivering safety training; experience in conducting safety compliance assessments and audits; knowledge of federal occupational safety standards and practices; may require experience at a national laboratory or U.S. Department of Energy; or an equivalent combination of education or experience.
Desired Qualifications
Applicants should have a B.S. in Environmental Health and Safety, engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or a science-related discipline and 5-8 years of experience in safety management. Successful candidates will have:
Experience developing and/or updating compliance programs as required by applicable regulation as well as operating existing written programs.
Ability to develop and deliver training which meets both regulatory requirements and the needs of the audience.
Knowledge sufficient to serve as a subject matter expert in occupational safety matters, including but not limited to fall protection, lock out tag out, confined space, hazard communication, respiratory protection, among others.
Experience managing construction and contractor safety
Excellent communication skills, in person and in writing, with a diverse range of people, including stakeholders, management, employees, unions, students, and the public.
Ability to understand, interpret, research, and explain regulations, industry standards, and analytical methods and reports.
