NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Salary Range:

$228,700 - $388,800

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

What Your Job Will Be Like:

Are you passionate about the nuclear fuel cycle and grid modernization and dedicated to building a diverse and hardworking team to explore innovative and creative solutions to some of the nation’s most unusual and unique problems?The Nuclear Fuel Cycle Grid Modernization Center staff are focused on research and development addressing the urgent need to modernize the nation’s grid and nuclear energy and address nuclear waste issues. These are key programs to mitigate and adapt to climate change. The Center includes four groups – Electric Grid Security, Nuclear Energy Fuel Cycle, Nuclear Energy Safety Technologies, and Defense Waste Management Programs. Sandia’s technical support of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in Carlsbad, NM is managed within Center 8800. The 8800 Director is responsible for relationships with key, high level sponsors in DOE and other government agencies with the goal of growing Sandia's impact in energy resilience. The selected Director will manage the complex line activities of the Center, which include experimental laboratory and field work across the nation, a critical facility with researchers and modelers in Carlsbad, and the Resilient Energy Systems Mission Campaign.On any given day, the selected candidate may be called on to:

Drive and align Sandia’s nuclear fuel cycle and grid modernization programs with Sandia’s overall mission

goals.

Steward and advance the Center’s capabilities (as embodied in the organization’s staff, facilities, and tools) in support of Sandia priorities, including our energy, nuclear waste, nuclear deterrence, environmental restoration and monitoring, and nonproliferation missions.

Develop and maintain key relationships for Sandia customers and sponsors (both internal and external) including other national laboratories (e.g., NREL, PNNL, INL) and federal agencies (e.g., DOE-OE, DOE-NE, DOE-EM, DOE-CESER, and the NRC).

Provide input and implement vision and developmental roadmaps and provide overall well thought out integration and direction for Groups and Departments within the Center and the Energy and Homeland Security Program Portfolio.

Lead, mentor, and develop your management team and staff with an emphasis on building a diverse and inclusive team.

Assure safe and secure program execution (Center-level indirect and program budgets, staffing, and deliverables) and address performance and execution gaps.

Lead all aspects of activities to ensure they are completed in a safe and balanced manner in accordance with ESH requirements.

Qualifications We Require:

Master's degree or above in science, mathematics, engineering, or relevant technical field, with at least 10 years of relevant experience; OR equivalent combination of education and experience

8 or more years of managerial experience, including leading and directing managers and complex organizations

Experience developing and leading large RD programs

Active DOE Q-level security clearance (or equivalent - DOD Top Secret) with the ability to obtain an SCI clearance which may require a polygraph test

Experience working in or with laboratory personnel to create and maintain a safe, secure, and effective environment for all work activities and employees

This position requires the ability and willingness to travel.

Qualifications We Desire:

PhD in science, engineering, or mathematics

Experience developing and leading grid, energy, and/or nuclear waste programs

Experience working at a high level in the federal government, particularly with the DOE, NRC, or energy- related congressional committees

Broad understanding of Sandia’s missions

Proven ability to build collaborations both within an organization and with external partners including other laboratories, universities, and industry

Demonstrated ability to build, energize, and lead large teams and programs across geographic, institutional, and organizational boundaries.

History of successful external program development, communications, and leadership

Senior leadership-level strategy development

Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and changing priorities, mediate disputes, and apply leadership concepts and techniques

Proven ability to create and maintain a safe, secure, and effective environment for all work activities and employees

Experience applying innovative approaches to technical problems

Demonstrated, proven leadership in fostering an inclusive and civil environment where all employees feel a sense of belonging and have opportunities for career growth that benefit both the organization and the individual

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, both of which require US citizenship. SCI access may also require a polygraph examination. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain these levels of access may be impacted.
