Overview of This Position
The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Regional Network - Mid Atlantic (The Network) at Cornell University is a research center within the Office of the Vice President for Research & Innovation. The Network is leading innovators within its regional ecosystem of colleges and universities, industry, startups, and venture investors to identify, prototype and develop dual-use technology - both commercial and military - while providing experiences to apply processes and tools used by industry, academia, and venture capitalists to translate their concepts and research into useful products.This new position will direct The Network's membership and funding programs, coordinating requirements and activities, tracking and reporting on collaborative activities, and partnering on communications. The position will identify strengths in organizations and individuals, build productive coalitions, and represent The Network with the highest standards of ethics and professionalism. The position is in Ithaca, New York, on the campus of Cornell University. Approximately 30% of the Network & Program Director's time will involve travel to AFRL locations, regional member sites, conferences, and events to promote The Network and engage with current and prospective members.

What You Will Do
As Network & Programs Director, you will manage and optimize The Network's engagement with the Air Force Research Laboratory enterprise, as well as the United States Air Force and Space Force, by recruiting, energizing, and stimulating translational collaboration among colleges and universities, defense contractors of diverse sizes and sectors, and early-stage companies in civil and commercial markets. In this highly visible role, you will function as an individual contributor, directing and coordinating the work of others through collaborative project management and contractual requirements.
You regularly will engage with diverse communities to help people cultivate knowledge and skills and develop practical solutions to big innovation challenges. You will work in partnership with internal and external teams to lead and coordinate research translation and workforce development activities across organizational boundaries. You will work to expand Network membership, including government, academic, startup, investor, and industry members. You also will work with leadership to maximize effectiveness of Network operations, including research and workforce development activities; tracking project milestones, managing and reporting financial performance; streamlining daily operations; evaluating Network performance; and executing special business projects.
Through our partnership funding program, you will encourage the formation and development of multi-organizational research teams and provide mentorship and support to Network members applying for funding. These responsibilities require effective oral and written communications with academic, industry, and government collaborators in the Mid-Atlantic region and crisp, compelling, and clear guidance to others.
Duties include:
Monitoring relevant activities and developments in the Mid-Atlantic region to keep abreast of defense-relevant translational researchIdentifying, cultivating, and stewarding prospects for Network membershipManaging and optimizing the use of all Network assets, in collaboration with the AFRL, Network, and Cornell University teamsFacilitating multiple cycles of Partnership Project applications, including the review, selection, award, and contracting steps using a standard portfolio and project management methodologyDeveloping strategies and operational methods to reach key goals and performance indicatorsWorking with the Communications Director and staff on effective systems of communication between the Network community and its constituentsPartnering with the Communications Director to share Network developments and success stories
