Description:
This position is to assist with decommissioning of a data center, specifically focusing on the network side. They will be responsible for researching, shutting down, and physically removing network devices, as well as assisting with troubleshooting and business as usual work. The engineer should have experience with advanced routing, BGP, Palo Alto firewalls, and load balancing. They should also possess strong communication skills and be a proactive and resourceful problem solver. The position is a contract role with a potential for overtime and off-hours work.
Partnering with other internal staff members to complete the exit of a data center in the Dallas metro area.
• Location: Dallas-metro (on-site work as required)
Responsibilities include:
• Research installed network devices and document active/inactive network connections and devices
• Collaborate with other team members on migration and decommissioning plan; anticipate risks and provide options to mitigate
• Submit change requests for work being performed
• Engineer will be un-racking equipment and removing cabling in a production data center so needs to be able to lift up to 40 pounds and have flexibility to work various shifts
• Remove devices from network management tools
Additional Skills:
• CCNP or higher (or equivalent exp.) is required
• Palo Alto firewall experience (intermediate)
• F5 load balancer experience (intermediate)
• Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) are essential
• We might also ask this engineer to back-fill BAU (business as usual) tasks if not fully utilized on the data center exit project
Additional Skills & Qualifications:
-looking for a self starter. Someone who can take initiative
-The sole focus of this role is for this Network Engineer to decommission their existing network and firewall equipment. 90% of their day will be in the software configuring and decommissioning and 10% will be physically removing the device and setting it on a pallet near the end of the rack.
-Their day to day will be the exit is the focus of decommissioning. Shutting down and understanding which traffic is flowing through which devices. Physically going and shutting them off, putting change request in when they are ready. 2 step shutdown, soft shutdown then hard power. It’s not a gigantic data center, probably 4 rows of of cabinets. Less than 30 cabinets.
-We have two pairs of PA firewalls in there. One isn’t used that much. It’s more of an out of band firewall. Probably be the last thing to be shut down. Just installed them back in September. Palo 5420’s next gen firewalls. They are multi v-sys. Virtual firewalls in one pair of boxes. Someone familiar with Palo Alto especially in a multi v-sys environment and some advanced routing and get into heavy BGP in the center.
