Position Summary
Collaborates with peers and leadership to craft department policies, objectives, and plans. Manages a risk evaluation process to ensure identification and audit coverage of high-risk areas within assigned business area(s). Establishes and manages audit processes to maximize the effectiveness/efficiency of audit assignments. Ensures overall audit quality for assigned business area(s). Facilitates the professional development of subordinates.
Essential Responsibilities
Assign financial, operational, information technology, contract, special investigation, and/or compliance audit assignments to audit personnel. Approve for each audit assignment the objective(s) and scope of work to be performed. Monitor/facilitate/participate in the completion of audit assignments. Ensure that audit/consulting work is completed in accordance with Department standards related to planning, workpaper documentation and report issuance.
Assist the CAE in establishing department standards, policies, goals, objectives, and KPIs. Lead the effort to successfully complete annual Department Goals and provide leadership on special projects underway by the department and/or the Company.
Evaluate/monitor the risks associated with assigned audit areas (Xcel Energy business areas) and oversee the development of an annual audit plan to address those risks. Collaborate with other Audit Department management personnel to integrate the Manager's audit plan into the overall Department Audit Plan.
Lead the effort to provide consultative advice and recommendations to business areas, including recommendations to management that improve the effectiveness of operations and efficiently mitigate risks. Manage the client relationship between Audit Services and appropriate business area management and, as appropriate, the external auditors. Discuss with appropriate management opportunities to enhance operations and control costs.
Oversee, review, and approve the publication of reports on the results of audit and consulting projects, including recommendations for improvements. Review the adequacy of management's response to audit report recommendations. Ensure that results of audit and consulting projects are adequately documented in workpapers and properly communicated in reports.
Manage the audit budget in the assigned audit areas. Monitor the productivity of assigned staff and efficient use of Department resources to accomplish the annual audit plan with budgets allowed.
Regularly provide performance feedback to audit staff, and facilitate the development of audit competencies, skills and knowledge in assigned staff. Develop the skills of staff through on-the-job and formal training and development activities. Manage the hiring of staff and contract auditors. Provide guidance to staff regarding department and company policies and procedures. Create and sustain a positive work environment for staff through recognition, team-building and other efforts.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, or other related field required. An advanced degree is desirable.
Certifications: CIA (Certified Internal Auditor) or CPA (Certified Public Accountant) must be held or obtained during employment.
Other pertinent certifications, such as CISA and CMA, desirable.
Experience, Skills & Knowledge Base:
At least seven years of business experience, including audit experience.
Must have supervisory experience.
Must possess a thorough understanding of internal control concepts and their practical application.
Must possess strong interpersonal and communication (verbal & written) skills.
Knowledge of utility operations is highly desirable.
