Summary This position is located within the Department of Commerce (DOC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Weather Service (NWS), National Hurricane Center (NHC) with one vacancy located in Miami, FL. Responsibilities As a Meteorologist (Warning Coordination Meteorologist), you will perform the following duties: Provide Impact Based Decision Support Services (IDSS) to emergency managers, other decision makers, weather industry partners, the media and other users both domestically and internationally. Works directly with FEMA's Hurricane Liaison Team to ensure federal and state emergency management partners have information to make informed preparedness decisions. Responds to inquiries from USAID, the US State Department, and foreign government and/or media during international tropical cyclone threats. Leads and conducts evaluations of National Hurricane Center (NHC) products and services. Reviews products and services for adherence to established policy. During the hurricane season (15 May-30 November) has primary responsibility for all tropical and subtropical cyclone forecasts and warnings for the United States civilian and military interests in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, eastern north Pacific Ocean, and other countries which have delegated the responsibility to the United States. Requirements Conditions of Employment WORK ENVIRONMENT: The incumbent must have the stamina to work occasional rotating shifts, sometimes including extra hours without days off for extended periods under stressful conditions and be able to stand the rigors of foreign travel, sometimes in developing countries. You MUST have a bachelor's degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included: A. Degree: meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included: 1. At least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of credit in meteorology/atmospheric science including a minimum of: a. Six semester hours of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics;* b. Six semester hours of analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale); c. Three semester hours of physical meteorology; and d. Two semester hours of remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation. 2. Six semester hours of physics, with at least one course that includes laboratory sessions.* 3. Three semester hours of ordinary differential equations.* 4. At least nine semester hours of course work appropriate for a physical science major in any combination of three or more of the following: physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and computer science. * There is a prerequisite or corequisite of calculus for course work in atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics, physics, and differential equations. Calculus courses must be appropriate for a physical science major. OR B. Combination of education and experience: course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education To qualify at the GS-14 level: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: To qualify at the GS-14: Applicants must possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following: Developing, modifying and implementing plans to improve hurricane or coastal flooding services and products; and Collaborating with federal, state or local agencies to develop weather waring preparedness plans. Education Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the above requirements. You must provide acceptable documentation that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
