JOB REQUIREMENTS: Duties The MRT (Cancer Registrar) serves in a level 1Acomplexity VA healthcare system with medical oncology, radiationoncology, surgical oncology services and a research program affiliatedwith a major medical school. The Central Virginia VA Health Care Systemconsists of a complex tertiary care healthcare facility with 349operating beds and four outpatient clinics in Fredericksburg (2),Charlottesville and Emporia. These facilities provide some of the finestmedical care and cutting-edge technology in central Virginia. Majorduties include but are not limited to: Searches the medical record toidentify and code all information pertinent to the patient\'s diagnosisAdheres to the guidelines set forth by the the AJCC Staging ManualInternational Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICDO), ICD-10,and SEER Surgical Codes when coding tumor registry abstracts. Keepsabreast of new medical terminology and revisions to the above manuals.Utilizes coding references to ensure that complete and accurate data iscollected. Codes information contained on several forms and documentsthat make up an entire record. Codes diseases, surgical procedures, andcauses of injury (uses specific codes required in a cancer registry,stage of disease, morphology, and topography using InternationalClassification of Diseases for Oncology, AJCC Staging Manual and theROADS Manual) Independently codes a wide variety of medical diagnostic,therapeutic, and surgical procedures. Codes diseases and possible causesof disease. Codes stages of disease using International Classificationof Diseases for Oncology. Analyzes the consistency of coding of registrydata, cancer diagnosis, histology, treatment (including surgicalprocedures, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormonal therapy, and radiationtherapy.) Identifies coding discrepancies. Facilitates resolution ofcoding discrepancies by discussion with providers/registry coordinator.Codes complicated medical records having diagnostic, surgical andtherapeutic procedures that are identified as difficult to classify.Maintains a control system to ensure that all cases of cancer are codedin a timely manner by adhering to Registry Operations and Data Standardsand appropriate VA Regulations. Reviews records to obtain data which isthen entered into the registry software (The oncology data is availablefor analysis and used by health care staff for research, patient care,protocol studies, and trends in cancer).
