  The Intensive Outpatient Clinic Medical Director provides high-quality, cost-effective primary care to a targeted medically and behaviorally complex patient population and provides operational oversight to the interdisciplinary team supporting the value-based care program. Key responsibilities include: the coordination of exceptional clinical and behavioral health care delivery, research endeavors, educational efforts, and administrative duties that support clinic operations. The Medical Director facilitates collaboration between all members of the interdisciplinary team as well as with strategic community and institutional partners.

  This position reports to University of Utah Health’s Chief Population Health Officer and is located at the University of Utah Population Health Center near Rose Park.

  The Intensive Outpatient Clinic Medical Director will manage clinical practice with administrative duties to support clinic operations and growth. The expected effort distribution is below:

  Effort

  Roles & Responsibilities

  The Intensive Outpatient Clinic Medical Director fulfills multiple roles & responsibilities to advance the Mission, Vision, and Values of the University of Utah Population Health Team and organization. Effectively managing each of the below responsibilities will be vital to the success of the Intensive Outpatient Clinic Medical Director and the program. Role & Responsibility domains include:

  Clinical:

  Provide primary care services to University of Utah Health’s Intensive Outpatient Clinic patients in a manner consistent with the scope of practice and quality of care standards set by University of Utah Health and the Population Health TeamUnder the direction of the Chief Population Health Officer, supervise allied health care providers and learners as assigned – with such supervision being covered under Medical Director’s University of Utah malpractice insurance coverageManage the Intensive Outpatient Clinic’s patient enrollment process and subsequent patient panel’s clinical and financial outcomesOperational & Financial:

  Provide clinical operational oversight for the Intensive Outpatient Clinic to ensure reliable, high-quality patient and care team experiencesResolve escalated day-to-day issues arising from operations requiring coordination within the team or with strategic partnersManage the Intensive Outpatient Clinic to the approved annual budgetPresent new opportunities to enhance clinic operations, service offerings, and/or the care team experience to the Chief Population Health Officer for vetting and approvalManage the recruitment and onboarding processes for approved Intensive Outpatient Clinic positionsUsing data analytics to inform creative thinking for Intensive Outpatient Clinic process improvement – ensuring the delivery of high-quality, low-cost careClinic Leadership:

  Comply with all directives of the Chief Population Health relating to the Medical Director’s employmentComply with the Mission, Vision, and Values and strategic directions of the University of Utah Population Health TeamSet and be accountable for annual performance goals of the Intensive Outpatient ClinicManage the Intensive Outpatient Clinic team’s annual performance evaluation process – identifying new opportunities to improve the care team’s effectiveness and experienceRepresent the Intensive Outpatient Clinic and Population Health Team in internal and external venues – forming positive, collaborative relationshipTeam & System Engagement:

  Positively contribute and collaborate as a member of the Population Health Team and other committees addressing various strategic outcomes and initiativesUnderstand complex processes and roles within an integrative care organization, with the ability to work collaboratively within the clinic and across the overall organizationIdentify and expertly navigate challenging conversations with peers, staff and leadership throughout the organizationAs an employee of University of Utah Health, the Medical Director is required to:

  Comply with all applicable policies, procedures, practices, requirements and standards of University of Utah HealthComply with all applicable laws and canons of professional ethicsComply with all other requirements of the standard employment agreementThis position is considered Category I: Mandatory and required on campus or health care facilities to support on-site operations. Employees hired into this category will be required to be physically located at 168 North 1950 West, Salt Lake City, UT 84116 if they are healthy and without COVID -19 symptoms.

  Minimum Qualifications

  Medical Director must hold a valid and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Utah.Medical Director must have and maintain U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency number without any suspension, diminution or revocation.Medical Director must maintain membership in good standing on the medical staff of such hospitals as the Chief Population Health Officer may request, with no suspension, diminution or loss of such privileges for a period in excess of thirty (30) days.Medical Director must meet all the qualifications to participate in the Medicare and Medicaid programs or any similar government-funded health care program.Medical Director must maintain a practice of medicine consistent with recognized standards of medical care and perform all activities in accordance with those standards.Medical Director shall meet all qualifications to participate in programs maintained by University of Utah Health for professional malpractice liability coverage for its employed physicians.This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated vaccination requirements, or be approved for an exemption, prior to the first day of work. We protect our patients, coworkers and community by requiring all patient-sensitive employees to be immunized according to CDC standards and hospital policy. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.
