JHU Student Health & Wellness Center seeks a Medical Assistant to provide high quality and effective patient care. The Medical Assistant shares responsibility for the provision of high-quality health care in compliance with state, federal, and ambulatory accreditation requirements.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Take patient’s complete vital signs, smoking history, and note allergies with initials and credentials noted in the computer.
Perform height & weight measurements, audiometer testing, visual acuity testing, etc. as necessary with documentation in the computer.
Obtain all specimens including venipuncture for lab tests ordered by clinicians.
Perform in house laboratory tests (Monospot, urine dip, rapid strep, urine pregnancy, finger stick glucose, Influenza A & B, COVID-19, and hemoglobin, etc.) as protocol indicates and ordered by clinicians.
Prepare lab specimens and accurately complete forms for transport.
Chaperone the clinicians during the female gynecological exams, breast exams, and male genital exams.
Perform injections as ordered by the clinician and utilize the computer system for documentation.
Perform IV’s as ordered by clinicians.
Perform EKGs as ordered by clinicians.
Perform crutch fitting, dressing changes, nebulization treatments, ear irrigation, and orthostatic vitals as ordered by the clinicians.
Call parking office or security office for patient transportation when needed.
Provide first aid as necessary.
Document any service rendered to a patient in the computer.
Inventory, order, stock and continue condom program at Student Health & Wellness Center (SHWC).
Prepare Travel Packages for clinicians.
Inspect, clean, and stock supplies in clinician’s exam rooms, Observation Room and Procedure Room.
Perform laboratory quality control procedures for opening the SHWC when necessary.
Stock the restrooms with supplies.
Prepare Tylenol/ibuprofen packets.
Keep inventory on soup kits and prepare kits.
Perform PAPRS check monthly.
Open active supply room.
Turn on pharmacy and observation room computer.
Take down and install curtains for laundering July and December.
Adhere to standard precautions for infection control.
Assist in biohazard waste removal from Lab and Observation room when necessary.
Prepare SHWC for closing on a daily basis.
Attend monthly Staff Meeting Attend SHWC educational programs and show evidence of continued self-development and professional involvement by participating in activities and educational programs of your professional organization.
Share the responsibility for ongoing assessment of quality and efficiency of patient care services.
Continually monitor patient flow in the waiting areas.
Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Additional Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and non-verbally in order to function as a team member.
Representative on University-wide committees: Attend any HSA Committee meetings as assigned by the supervisor.
Physical Requirements
Stooping and bending; reaching, lifting and grasping objects; walking and/or standing for extended periods of time.
Hours are 8:30am-5:00pm with some Saturday and some evening hours each fall and spring semester.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or GED required.
Certification/Registration as a Medical Assistant (e.g. CMA, AAMA, RMA, AMT, NAHP) required.
If not currently certified/registered, must become certified/registered within 90 days of date of hire. Current CPR certification by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross required.
Must maintain MA and CPR/AED certification/registration during duration of employment in this position.
In order to be eligible for certification/registration, successful completion of an accredited Medical Assistant training program or five or more years of primary medical care medical assistant experience is required.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
