  The Alonzo W. Ashley Fellowship Program was named in honor of Al Ashley, who retired from SLAC in 1999 after 31 years of dedicated and exemplary service, particularly in the area of championing diversity in the sciences and engineering. During his tenure at SLAC, Al pioneered programs that promoted diversity and encouraged career development for employees and career exploration for talented students. He was a recipient of a 2005 NSF Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring in recognition of his outstanding mentoring efforts and programs that enhanced the participation of historically underrepresented groups in science, mathematics, and engineering. Al served as a mentor to hundreds of emerging scientists and engineers during their journey to their chosen fields.

  This program is designed to provide a year-long research/employment experience in each of our six major directorates. The program is intended for post-graduate candidates with the longer-term objective of potentially moving them into regular employment with the lab.

  Note: This is a 12-month fixed-term position with the possibility of extension or conversion to a regular- continuing position. Assignment duration is contingent upon project needs and funding.

  Position overview:

  The SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory at Stanford University has an exciting opportunity for recent graduates in Mechanical Engineering. The Research Mechanical Engineering Department in the Fundamental Physics Directorate (FPD) needs a talented engineer to support FPD project needs concerning structural engineering, seismic calculations and designs, along with Work Planning and Control (WPC) planning and documentation.

  As part of the Fundamental Physics Directorate’s Research Mechanical Engineering Department staff, you will collaborate with experienced engineering staff in the completion of properly landing, securing and installing research tools in various and numerous locations throughout the SLAC campus. This work may include developing and executing installation procedures, seismic calculations, interfacing with both Environmental Safety and Health (ESH) and the Building Inspection Office (BIO), writing test plans and reports as well as interfacing with other members of our team and senior management. Your employment will be in California, and your primary work location is at SLAC in Menlo Park CA.

  We’re looking for highly motivated engineers with a strong desire to learn and a commitment to excellence while at the same time being able to manage complexity in a dynamic environment.

  Your specific responsibilities include:

  Developing the designs required to seismically anchor process tools. Working directly with SLAC BIO (Building Inspection Office) to gain approvals.

  Developing, documenting, and executing mechanical integration processes and procedures.

  Designing, procuring, and integrating complex mechanical components and support equipment.

  Documenting, collecting and analyzing test results.

  Recommending process changes to improve efficiency and quality.

  Working in a cleanroom environment.

  Other duties may also be assigned

  To be successful in this position you will bring:

  Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related technical disciplines

  Ability to work in the integration and testing of complex systems.

  Solid understanding of mechanical engineering principles.

  Ability to work independently, with minimum supervision.

  Demonstrated ability to adjust and adapt to changing work priorities.

  Excellent communication skills and the ability to synthesize complex technical and scientific information.

  In addition, preferred requirements include:

  Experience working in clean rooms / clean room environment

  Experience with 3D CAD packages (solid modelling) preferably Solid EDGE

  Design and assembly of complex mechanical systems

  Experience with mechanical design, procurement, fabrication, assembly and testing

  Ability to perform complex mechanical analysis (structural, thermal, vibrational, etc.) under the guidance of a Senior Engineer.

  The expected pay range for this position is $84,000 to $141,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
