  Job Summary (includes but is not limited to the following, other duties may be assigned)

  Under the direction of the Lead Mechanic and in accordance with the Plant and Manufacturers' Procedures perform preventive and corrective maintenance on the plant's mechanical and rotating equipment.

  Job Responsibilities

  Perform corrective and preventive maintenance on mechanical rotating equipment and electrical equipment in accordance with plant and vendor procedures.

  Identify and correct problems on rotating equipment, boilers and auxiliary equipment as needed. Provide recommendations for repair or replacement of defective mechanical and electrical equipment. Request parts and supplies to perform his/her work. Receive, unload and correctly store parts and supplies in the plant.

  Ability to align pumps and motors, perform seal replacements and repairs.

  Work within and insure strict adherence to all safety and environmental procedures.

  Ability to read and understand mechanical drawings and prints.

  Enter and update the work orders and maintain machinery history for all plant mechanical equipment in the computerized maintenance management software database. Acquire a complete understanding for using the database to prepare reports. Provide documentation of work performed, supplies used, and other items that will be required to plan and control maintenance activities. Prepare records and reports as required.

  Must be able to operate heavy industrial type machinery including, forklifts, overhead cranes, mobile cranes, man-lifts, etc.

  Must have the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. In addition, basic computer skills and knowledge is a requirement for this position.

  Research, design, and implement plant improvements and modifications as directed.

  Keep his/her primary workstation appearance clean and orderly while maintaining a professional atmosphere. Clean up and stow tools after performing assignments. Keep the shop clean and orderly.

  Assist in the operation of plant equipment as needed.

  Perform other tasks as directed by the Facilities Operation & Maintenance Manager.

  Job Requirements

  H.S. degree or equivalent required. NYC & Federal Refrigeration Licenses, NYC Boiler, Torch, Welding & Air Compressor Licenses preferable but not required.

  Must meet all the Maintenance Mechanic requirements outlined in the JFK Energy Center Employee Qualification Program.

  Must have a thorough knowledge of mechanical, electrical and rotating equipment. Must be capable of performing pump and fan maintenance, such as disassembly, rebuilding, reassembly and alignments. Must be capable of pipe fitting and various welding techniques. Must be able to troubleshoot and diagnose problems in systems, read and interpret blueprints, equipment specifications, and vendor service manuals. Ability to understand, develop and/or complete records and reports as required.

  Must be cooperative with those he/she contacts in this work (Co-Worker, Terminal Operators, Port Authority Personnel and General Public) and have the ability to work without direct supervision.

  Must know the hazards involved and the safety precautions to be practiced in the maintenance of power plant equipment and machinery. Work within and insure strict adherence to all safety procedures.

  The Mechanic must be able to climb at least 50 feet of rung ladder to access scaffolding, platforms, and other plant sites. Must be able to lift and carry heavy objects. Must be able to distinguish colors and perceive depth. Ability to remain alert during extended working hours. Ability to be fitted with full-faced respirator. Ability to work in confined spaces.

  Ability to drive a company vehicle. Must have a valid driver’s license. Ability to learn new skills and knowledge. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by plant conditions.

  All employees will participate in the fitness for duty program, which includes pre-employment physical examination and drug screening.

  Salary Information
