Overall Purpose:
Responsible to manage, direct, lead, and develop personnel in the Distribution Planning department. Oversee daily operations, support Grid Modernization efforts, and execute upon the company’s vision of implementing integrated system planning practices.Job Responsibilities:
Manage the distribution planning process to ensure safe, reliable, and cost effective operation of the distribution system (a) Identify and document recurring system operation conditions and trends requiring planning attention; (b) Assess the capabilities of the distribution system and its adherence with the planning criteria and industry best practices; (c) Conduct power flow studies, build power flow models, and prepare economic analyses to develop short- and long-term distribution system plans; (d) Develop expansion plans for the distribution system; (e) Create plans for the reliable connection of new customers (f) Lead the development of business cases to obtain capital funding necessary to implement projects. Provide comments on distribution planning related regulations with company impacts and recommend strategies relating to distribution planning. Coordinate distribution planning activities and projects with DLC’s transmission planning team.
Oversees, develops and conducts distribution system studies to determine new network additions and modifications needed to meet future expected load growth, DER interconnection, performance goals, and strategic objectives. Develops, recommends, and supports capital addition plans.
Directs analysis of forecast distribution substation demand, model distribution network components, and operation and ensures development of network modeling to represent current and future network configurations. Ensures the development and maintenance of an up-to-date distribution system model database. Communicates with Engineering, Construction, Operations and Asset Management to resolve identified loading issues.
Directs and conducts analysis of distribution network loading and operation for voltage, overload, and performance problems and recommend correction plans. Provides distribution circuit analytical support as requested and supports the Advanced Grid Technologies team.
Develops distribution planning personnel to be technically competent, team-oriented, collaborative, and productive. Manages by example as a seasoned, professional supervisor. Sets expectations, monitor performance, provides coaching and feedback, and delivers rewards and consequences to improve individual and team performance. Fosters employee involvement and coordination with other internal stakeholders
Function as a technical subject matter expert in relevant policy and regulatory discussions, working groups or proceedings to position the Company for positive outcomes.
Education/Experience Required :
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with minimum seven (7) years’ related experience.Education/Experience Preferred :
Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Professional Engineering licensure, and prior management experience.
Ten (10) years progressively responsible utility experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience with power system simulation software such as CYME, PSS\E, PSLF, PSCAD, EMTP, etc.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
Strong attention to detail.
Adaptability, flexibility, and comfort with working in a fast-paced environment.
Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage various priorities.
Ability to multi-task.
Prompt executor.
Additional Requirements:
In-office and field activities are driven by occasional role-specific tasks and critical business processes.
Must be able to work in various substation facility conditions (walking on uneven ground, climbing ladders, working safely nearby energized equipment, etc.) as required.
Desk and computer work is required.
Must possess valid driver’s license and be able to drive to various company locations.
Limited travel as required.
Scope:
Primary focus is on day-to-day management of operational execution, also develops and exercises business plans, policies, and procedures. Contributes to proactive planning exercises of management team as requested. Trains and develops staff. Plans the workflow. Looks for areas of process improvement and directs available resources to accomplish this. Leads changes and implementations for direct team as pushed through the organization.
Decision Impact:
Resolves problems of great complexity. Improves existing processes and systems using conceptualizing, reasoning, and interpretation skills. Solutions require thorough understanding of business strategies and issues. Defines broad based solutions that would require consideration of wider implications on organization results and resources.
Hybrid Work:
Position follows our hybrid work model, with a minimum of two days working in the office and the remaining days working remotely. Reporting location and frequency may be subject to change based on job role and department needs.
Storm Roles:
All Non-Union Employees will serve in storm roles as appropriate to their role and skillset. Utilize data to make business decisions as appropriate for the position, support data stewardship activities and partner with IT on underlying data needs.
