Summary This Maintenance Mechanic position is located within the Facilities Management Services at the Providence VA Healthcare System in Providence, RI. It is full time at 40 hours per week. DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY: This position is being filled using Direct-Hire Authority (5 CFR 337.201) for this occupation. Responsibilities The incumbent performs a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings, grounds, and related structures, fixtures, and utilities. The duties are performed within at least two trades. Duties include, but are not limited to: Performs a variety of tasks involving upkeep of equipment, buildings, grounds and related fixtures, and utilities of the Medical Center; Sets up, adjusts, and adapts hand and power tools to accomplish tasks; Uses hand tools and a variety of test equipment such as wire cutters, drills, soldering irons, screwdrivers, tests lamps and test meters; Orders parts needed for repair; maintains a stock of frequently needed parts; Reports time and materials used on various jobs in accordance with established medical center procedure; Works with wiring diagrams, electrical maintenance and repair manuals when repairing electrical equipment; Constructs, alters, repairs, or modifies items and structures such as doors, walls, windows, interior and exterior trim, and staircases where accuracy, spacing, and fit are essential and structural soundness and/or appearance are important; Responsible for repair and maintenance of equipment such as would be maintained by an electrician, medical equipment repairer, carpenter, plumber, and/or welder. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The duties involve climbing on ladders and scaffolds, crawling in cramped spaces, standing for long periods of time, stooping and kneeling, use of both hands simultaneously, and accurate eyesight. At times, heavy lifting and pulling from awkward positions is required. The incumbent is exposed to extremes of heat, cold, and humidity. Work is done indoors and outdoors and at times in dirty, dusty locations including crawl spaces, interstitial spaces, roofs, and shops of the medical center. The incumbent is subject to all sorts of cuts, abrasions, bruises, and burns. While welding, the incumbent wears a mask as a precaution against burns and eye injury. Welding fumes can result in repertory ailments and metal fume fever. Sometimes it is necessary for the incumbent to work in an environment of contagious diseases where the use of protective masks, gowns, gloves, and proper aseptic techniques must be followed. Education Additional Information Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). It is a requirement that all HCP to receive annual seasonal influenza vaccination or obtain an exemption for medical or religious reasons. Wearing a face mask is required when an exemption to the influenza vaccination has been granted. HCP in violation of this directive may face disciplinary action up to and including removal from federal service. HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations or who come into contact with VA patients or other HCP as part of their duties.
