JOB TITLE: LOCAL BUILDING INSPECTOR DEPARTMENT: OFFICE OF THEBUILDING INSPECTOR EMPLOYMENT TYPE: FULLTIME/NON-EXEMPTUNION/NON-UNION: SUPERVISORY AND PROFESSIONAL UNION The City ofPittsfield\'s Office of the Building Commissioner is seeking a qualifiedindividual to fill the position of Local Building Inspector. Under thesupervision of the Building Commissioner, the Inspector\'sresponsibilities will include reviewing permit applications, plans andspecifications and issuing permits. RESPONSIBILITIES -Performs required inspections and periodic inspections as required by780 CMR, the Massachusetts Building Code, will complete inspectionreports and issue certificates of inspection. - Under the supervision ofthe Building Commissioner, the inspector enforces the provisions of theState Building Code and any other applicable statutes, rules,regulations, ordinances and/or bylaws. - Assists the BuildingCommissioner in the performance of their duties. - Performs inspectionsof new and existing buildings and structures. - Examines and/or approvesplans and specifications for new buildings and structures, and forrepairs and alterations of existing buildings and structures. - Issuespermits and maintains electronic records of permits granted andinspections completed. - Writes and maintains inspection reports andviolation notices. - Investigates building code and zoning violationcomplaints and takes the necessary actions to enforce violationcorrections. - Performs other local building inspector duties asassigned. QUALIFICATIONS - High school diploma or equivalent. - Theinspector shall have had at least five years of experience in thesupervision of building construction or design or in the alternative atwo-year associate degree in a field related to building construction ordesign or any combination of education and experience which would conferequivalent knowledge and ability. - Shall have a general knowledge ofthe quality and strength of building materials; a general knowledge ofthe accepted requirements for building construction, fire prevention,light, ventilation, and safe exits; and a general knowledge of otherequipment and materials essential for safety, comfort, and convenienceof the occupants of a building or structure, and the energy requirementsof the Massachusetts Building Code. - Shall obtain the requiredcertification by the Board of Building Regulations and Standards inaccordance with the provisions of 780 CMR 110.R7. - Shall obtaincontinuing education credit hours required to maintain Building Officialcertification. - Massachusetts Class D driver\'s license. - Ability tointeract and communicate with customers on a cordial and professionalbasis. - Experience writing cost estimates and construction contracts. -Strong interpersonal skills, particularly in conflict resolution andproblem solving. - Ability to interact with people on an up-beat andfriendly basis, regardless of circumstances. - Highly organizedself-starter with ability to work independently. HOURS Monday -Friday, 35 hours per week SALARY Starting rate \$26.43 - \$27.91Annual increases up to \$36.60 per hour
