DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Houston Public Library (HPL) is seeking an energetic, flexible, team-oriented person with a passion for customer service to work as Library Service Specialist in CaféCollege Houston at our Carnegie Neighborhood Library and Center for Learning. CaféCollege serves as a literacy center for Houston Public Library; providing programs for adult literacy and high school equivalency and offers guidance for students looking for college admission assistance, financial aid guidance, career exploration, SAT and ACT preparation, and workshops and one-on-one advising. This position will helps coordinate cafécollege Houston programs, works with partners, schedule events and workshops, and ensures daily operations run smoothly.
Successful candidates will communicate effectively, provide exceptional customer service, enjoy working with, learning, and teaching new and emerging technologies, be at ease multitasking in a fast-paced public service setting and enjoy interacting with people of all ages from diverse backgrounds.
Essential job duties and responsibilities for a Library Services Specialist (Café College) include:
Interacting with customers in CaféCollege Houston to determine career and/or college needs and direct to the appropriate resources.
Working closely with partners and vendors to schedule workshops and one-on-one sessions with customers both virtually and in person.
Coordinating activities, presentations, and workshops in collaboration with external community partners in regard to college and career readiness.
Catalogs resources for college applications, research, workforce development and adult literacy; keeping the center’s website updated.
Compiling materials, coordinating library services for non-traditional college bound populations making it easier for the public to search for colleges, take virtual tours, assess aptitude tests, and start the college applications.
Assisting students of all ages connect with the needed resources.
Liaisons with Communications to update website and marketing for events at cafécollege Houston.
Work an evening and weekend rotation (Saturday and Sunday).
HPL serves a population of 2.2 million citizens through a network of 42 library locations spread out across the Houston area.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Position requires stooping and bending; lifting of library materials up to 20 pounds. Must be able to move freely throughout the library to file/retrieve library materials. Must be able to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a Bachelor's degree.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
No experience is required. Directly related professional experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year to year basis
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
A valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2).
PREFERENCES
Knowledgeable with the college application process and completing financial aid documents;
Proficient computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Detail oriented and knowledge of keeping clear records.
Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with others.
Experience working with youth and families
To better serve our diverse communities, fluency in Spanish is highly preferred
