About Library Service Center Associate- Temporary

  *This role is temporary and expected to last a maximum of 6 months.

  Position Summary:

  Performs the accurate and timely retrieval, processing, and sending of patron and ILL-requested library materials from the off-site library storage facility to campus. This position also assigns storage shelving for newly arriving and returning transfers, assists with re-shelving returned library materials, and assists with physical withdrawals of deaccessioned materials.

  About the Work Unit:

  The Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries at Vanderbilt University comprises nine libraries, as well as service departments in collections services, digital scholarship & scholarly communications, information technology and digital services, and teaching & learning. We seek to create a welcoming environment and serve as a partner in research and scholarship. The libraries are dynamic places for faculty, staff, students, and alumni to reflect and discover. We also strive to be a workplace in which staff at every level continuously grow in knowledge and skills, staying abreast of advances and trends in librarianship to power relevant, vibrant research libraries.

  The Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries are fundamental to the university’s goal of advancing scholarship and learning. We collect, preserve and make accessible a wide variety of resources, we partner with faculty and students to shape research, and we encourage the development of informed scholars and engaged citizens.

  Within Collections Services, the Annex staff maintain and provide access to the Library’s remote circulating collection.

  Key Functions and Expected Performance:

  Receives patron and ILL requests via the ILS, email, and phone. Verifies citations, provides accurate retrieval and accomplishes timely charging/scanning/sending of library materials.

  Prioritizes workflow to meet stated delivery times, as well as shares responsibility for assisting unexpected faculty and scholar visits.

  Responsible for accurate verbal and written communication with patrons, guests, staff, and a variety of service representatives in regards to all Annex services.

  Processes returned library materials, including physical re-shelving.

  Receives and processes transferred library materials into Library Annex storage shelving arrangements, including linear footage statistical record-keeping, database verification and updating, planning and assigning linear space for new library materials.

  Responsible for daily facilities inspections and verifications. Monitors electronic compact shelving equipment and building facilities. Occasionally assists with light-weight furniture, shelving and equipment relocations within the Library Annex.

  Assists with physical withdrawals, measurement, and recording of deaccessioned materials.

  Maintains statistical accountability.

  Participates in cross-training opportunities which may be offered by other departments.

  Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

  Supervisory Relationships:

  No supervisory responsibility. Reports to the manager of the Library Annex.

  Education and Certifications:

  Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary.

  Experience and Skills:

  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills is necessary.

  Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and common communication tools is necessary.

  Demonstrated organizational and problem-solving skills is necessary.

  Ability to push book trucks, as well as rolling and stationary ladders is necessary.

  Ability to climb rolling ladders to reach up to 12 foot shelves; retrieve and shelve books and boxed material daily is necessary.

  Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively, ability to solve problems in a timely manner and prioritize appropriately is necessary.

  Bibliographic knowledge and experience in working in library is preferred.
