Agency providing workforce development programs to residents in Wayne and Monroe counties, excluding the city of Detroit.
The Legal Intern opportunity offers flexible schedule based on department needs and student class schedule. The internship averages 20 hours/week up to 52 weeks.
Wage Rate: $20/hour
Job Summary
The legal intern will work closely with the legal services team specializing in expungements and driver's license reinstatement services.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct thorough legal research on relevant statutes, case law, and procedures pertaining to expungements and driver's license reinstatement in Michigan. Analyze and summarize findings to support our legal team's casework.Conduct thorough research regarding alternative fundings sources for the program.Assist in client intake procedures, including gathering necessary documentation, conducting interviews, and assessing eligibility for expungements and license reinstatement. Provide guidance and support to clients navigating the legal process.Draft legal documents, including motions to set aside and license reinstatement, and other court filings. Ensure accuracy and compliance with legal requirements.Collaborate with attorneys and staff in managing caseloads. Maintain organized case files, update case statuses, and assist in scheduling hearings or appointments.Support outreach efforts aimed at raising awareness about expungement and driver's license reinstatement services. Participate in community events, workshops, or informational sessions to educate individuals about their rights and available legal options.Appearing at court proceedings with the program attorneys getting valuable hands-on experience and assisting to present applicants' cases to judicial courts and tribunals.
Qualifications
All SEMCA team members are expected to be technically competent and committed to continuous development of their skills. The following skills, knowledge and education or certifications are specifically required for this position:
Currently enrolled in an accredited law program or recent law school graduation, with a minimum of 30 hours of coursework.Excellent communication skills, including interpersonal skills to interact with clients and community stakeholders.Commitment to upholding confidentiality and ethical standards in legal practice.Excellent computer skills, particularly with the Microsoft Office suite of programs.Completion of a Research & Writing course at an accredited law school.Reliable transportation.Ability to pass a background check, including educational and employment history, and criminal background.Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Physical Demands
Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment including a computer, vision to read printed materials on an LCD screen and smartphone, hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person and over the telephone.
