Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
One year experience as a collector, or one year experience as a clerical legal assistant, or one year equivalent legal secretary/assistant experience;
Excellent telephone and communication skills;
Good attendance record.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of legal documents and terminology;
Proficient in drafting routine correspondence, preparing and proofreading legal and other documents;
Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and effectively manage time;
Must be professional, responsible, reliable, and discreet;
Proficient with computer and word processing software;
Detail-oriented and self motivated.
Job Concepts
The duties of the Legal Assistant shall include, but are not limited to the following:
Collect on delinquent state debts from Colleges, Universities, State Agencies, Boards and CommissionsExamples of Work
The position of Legal Assistant may consist of, but are not limited to, the following duties:
Receive and process incoming legal mail from attorneys and various state and parish courts, scanning into our computer system for efficient access as needed;
Prepare and submit outgoing mail from the Legal section, scanning all documents into system;
Respond to requests for information from attorneys, various courts, state agencies, universities and colleges that may include current account legal status and account balance;
Review accounts submitted for legal action, searches and obtains current address and employment information to add to an account prior to the filing of legal action;
Request documentation of the debt from state agencies, colleges and universities for use by the AAG in court proceedings, which when received is scanned into our computer system;
Prepare and draft documents used by an Assistant Attorney General (AAG) for suits against debtors;
Prepare the documents needed to request service (notice to a debtor of pending legal action) by various parish Sheriff Offices, which may vary from parish to parish;
Prepare requests for current court costs and fees to be added to accounts in litigation;
Receive and make routine calls on accounts submitted to the Legal section from debtors;
Update and document thecollection system with all activity performed on an account that is submitted to the Legal section
