   Description Stony Brook University's Department of Technology and Society invites applicants for a temporary non-tenure track teaching faculty position with an expected start date of Fall 2024. The successful candidate will specialize in Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy and will be responsible for teaching courses in Science Policy, Statistics, Fundamental Data Science, and Quantitative Decision-Making. This position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about the intersection of technology, society, and policy, and who are eager to impart their expertise to the next generation of leaders in this field. The selected candidate will hold the official title of Lecturer or a local title of assistant professor of practice contingent upon qualifications.

  Key Responsibilities:

  Teach Courses: Deliver engaging and informative lectures. Prepare course materials, including syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts. Teaching requirement: Three (3) courses per semester.Curriculum Development: Contribute to the development and updating of curriculum and course content in alignment with current industry trends and academic standards.Student Engagement: Foster a stimulating learning environment that encourages student participation, debate, and research. Provide guidance and mentorship to students in their academic and career pursuits.Assessment and Grading: Develop and administer assessments to evaluate student performance. Provide timely and constructive feedback on assignments and exams.Departmental Collaboration: Collaborate with faculty members in the department to enhance interdisciplinary learning and research opportunities.The selected candidate will have a strong commitment to academic excellence and student success. They will also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

   Qualifications Required Qualifications:

  Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent). In lieu of a Ph.D., a Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) and three (3) years of teaching/industry experience in science policy, statistics, and quantitative decision-making.

  Preferred Qualifications

  Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in science policy, statistics, and quantitative decision-making. Prior teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level. Demonstrated expertise in science policy, statistics, and quantitative decision-making. Some knowledge of systems and systems theory. Understanding of fundamental data science concepts.

  Department Description: The Department of Technology and Society is an integral part of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Through our academic programs and sponsored projects, the Department of Technology and Society has enhanced the technological literacy and educational opportunities of thousands of students. We have also provided university, regional, and national leadership in educational innovation and STS (Science, Technology, and Society) curriculum development. Our courses and curriculum materials are used in many secondary schools and colleges. Our Faculty members and Project staff share a common goal of designing and implementing programs to help students of all ages become technologically literate with equal access to educational opportunities.   Encourage undergraduate students to explore the design of technological systems and their societal and environmental impacts.Involve graduate students in educational computing, and environmental and global industrial managementEngage K-12 students and their teachers in the study of how mathematical and scientific concepts are applied to the design of technological systems and provide effective professional development of teachers in regional K-12 school districts.Motivate and better prepare minority students to succeed in science, mathematics, and engineering studies.Focus on the innovative and effective use of information technologies.Develop leadership in offering courses and certificate programs through distance learning environments.

  Special Notes:

  This is a temporary one (1) year non-tenure-track position with the possibility of a one-year extension based on funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for overtime provisions of the FLSA.
