  Overview

  Job Summary

  This is a paid internship position intended for current graduate students enrolled in an accredited law school on a full or part time basis. The ideal Legislative & Regulatory Affairs intern candidate has strong written and verbal communication as well as strong analytical skills and an interest in legal drafting and statutory interpretation. The internship may be for the school year, summer, or both depending on the needs of the Authority and the availability of the candidate. The potential journey beyond this internship may include a post-graduation/pre-bar exam passage position with the Legal Compliance departments of the Authority.

  Responsibilities

  Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  In connection with rulemaking efforts, conducts legal research and analysis, receives and incorporates input from applicable program staff, Assistant/Deputy Attorneys General, Governor’s Rules Office, the Office of Administrative Law, and other external stakeholders such as sister agencies and the public.

  Helps ensure compliance with Administrative Procedures Act and Executive Order 63 (Murphy 2019) by, among other things, assisting with tracking both formal and informal public comment on proposed rules, keeping a record of the public engagement and stakeholder outreach process, and maintaining the rulemaking record.

  In connection with legislative efforts, reviews bills and researches current statutes to ensure NJEDA’s interests and needs are positively impacted by legislative changes.

  Creates reference tools for the Authority.

  Works on updates to EDA’s public website and its internal sites and systems to support the Authority’s Legal goals.

  Promotes teamwork and communication to encourage an interactive, cooperative, collaborative, and customer focused work environment among division, EDA staff, and external customers.

  Performs other duties and special projects, as assigned.

  Qualifications

  Required Skills and Abilities

  Knowledge of or ability to read, understand and communicate in layperson’s terms about complex legislation, litigation, and regulatory matters.

  Must possess advanced research ability and information technology skills.

  Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; proficient in grammar, spelling and editing; and foster communications with business professionals, public officials, legislators, general public, trade organizations and EDA staff.

  Ability to prioritize workload, must be highly organized, detail-oriented, handle various tasks simultaneously and work independently within limited time constrains.

  Ability to analyze data, prepare data visualization materials and other relevant documentation for leaders.

  Must be able to maintain confidentiality and deal effectively and diplomatically with business professionals and EDA staff.

  Demonstrates respectful behavior and promotes teamwork and communication to encourage an interactive, cooperative, collaborative and customer focused work environment among division, EDA staff and external customers.

  Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn new software packages.

  Proficiency in using Lexis for legal research.

  Required Qualifications

  Education and Experience Requirements

  Bachelor’s degree required;

  Enrollment in an accredited law school required. Second or Third-year law student preferred.
